I’ll be taking my fiance’s last name, but I haven’t decided if i’ll be keeping my maiden name as a middle name or dropping it entirely.

This is my second marriage and in my first marriage I intended to change my name throughout the engagement but when it got closer to the wedding date I just couldn’t go through with it. During my first marriage I used his last name socially, such as when signing a holiday card, but used my name the rest of the time. I never had a problem, but I suspected it might become a problem when we had children for various reasons.

I think it’s amazingly unfair that a guy doesn’t have to lose his name, but a girl does or faces judgment. I love my last name, and I’m not very into my fiance’s name, but there’s no question that it would be ME having to choose. If I choose to keep mine, it’ll make him feel bad and I’ll be judged for it and people will be all, questioning it and stuff, and it’ll just be an annoyance to deal with.

I might just tack his name on at the end, but then it’ll be long and basically like taking his name.

It’s really just plain unfair that it’s always the woman who has to choose this and face losing that part of her history. When I was young, I always considered myself more from my dad’s side than my mom’s, only because I had my dad’s last name. When I was little, it seemed more important. I was young and didn’t really understand, but I don’t think a lot of kids do, and I don’t like that first impression.

It’s not right that my mom’s family name is gone once it gets to me. As if we don’t have enough issues already, being women -_-

    sorry. /rant. haha

I am going to unoffically take his name…or borrow it, more a-like it.

I have a super long Latino name (5 names on my birth certificate). first, middle, confirmation (catholic), Father’s Family Name-Mother’s family name. I usually only use my father’s name, unless I am trying to show off.

My SO isn’t that proud of his last name and I am actually really proud of my last name. It dates back to medival Spain. SO what I am planning to do is drop my mom’s last name  and put his name before my father’s name and hyphonate it.

So it will be First, middle, Confirmation, Husband’s last name-father’s last name.

That way I can reserect my father’s last name if I am blessed with a son later on in life. My Brother was the last of our line and my dad has no one else to pass our name to. So if I can work this all, correctly then I can bring back my Father’s last name with my son (who will be named after my grandpa)

I’ll be taking my husband’s last name.  LOL – I already have the personalized plates saying so. Though I think it would be fun if we made up a new last name.  ๐Ÿ™‚

My last name is long and hard for others to spell so I’m looking foward to changing it, his is short and sweet and easy to spell.

Yes without a doubt. I’m not a fan of my last name and love Mr. O’s, so for that reason alone I’ll be changing. (Along with more practical things like starting a new family, with kids, I want us to all have the same last name, etc.)

I am just adding my FI’s last name. So I will just have four names.

After about 3 years of arguing, I’ll be taking my FI’s last name.

I’m an only child and our name ends with me, my uncle never had kids. Fiance is the youngest of four, but his two brothers are unmarried and childless. His nephews and niece have their father’s last name (my SIL’s kids). So in essence, his name ends with him too.

I wanted to hyphenate, but that wasn’t enough for Fiance. He takes his duties as name passer-oner very seriously!

I can’t move my maiden name to my middle name as I already have two, and one of those is my grandmother’s name, and that’s not going anywhere… and since I already have four names, adding one more will be overkill.

We ended up compromising. I will take FI’s last name, and our kids will have my maiden name as one of their middle names. So I still get to pass mine on ๐Ÿ™‚
(Although I’m bummed at losing symmetry. All my names are 5 letters long, and FI’s name is 6.)
