I don’t honestly know info behind the tradition of the garter, but there is no way in heck I’m going to let someone search up my skirt and remove something to toss into an audience of all of my family and friends, no matter how much I love him. Every time I see this at a wedding it seems so tacky, I cringe. If there is some deep and meaningful motivation behind it, someone please correct me.

I think a garter would look bulky under my dress, actually, not wearing one! I’m not sure what the purpose is, aside from being entertaining (and a wee bit embarrassing, if you ask me!). My fiance and I both think it’s a little tacky, so we’re not doing one. I guess the idea is that the girl who catches the bouquet and the guy that catches the garter will be the next to marry (not necessarily to each other).

That definitely will not be happening at my wedding.  There is no purpose in wearing one at the wedding unless you are doing the garter toss.  It’s used to hold up thigh high stockings, but I don’t really think people use them for that anymore.

No WAY! I’ve never seen it done at a wedding, only in videos online and on TV, and it’s not for me.

I’ve heard the historical tradition comes from making sure the bride is undressed for the wedding night (and the garter being symbolic of such) – the garter was thrown to the accompanying guests and thought to be good luck…..

We go back and forth.  For now, I’m planning to do a bouquet and a garter toss open to everyone (not just single men/women) with a cash prize to whomever catches it … re: garter – I won’t have him hunt up my dress for it (just have it available for tossing).

Yes, we’re doing it. It’s just a silly tradition for us, and I’ve never been to a wedding where they didn’t do one. Your Fiance takes off your garter, and flings it (or a separate toss garter) back to the group of single guys. Then, you toss your bouquet to the group of single girls. The guy that catches the garter then puts it on the girl who catches the bouquet. These two are supposed to be the next two to get married (not necessarily to each other). It’s just meant to be fun, I think my Fiance would be disappointed and our guests would be surprised if we didn’t.

Nope. I really think its dated and can look pretty tacky, so we’re opting to not do it.

Nope, but only because most of the guys who will be there will be married lol!! So it’s not that much of a point, the same goes for the bouquet, i doubt if we’ll do a bouquet toss, but i want to do the southern tradition of charms in a cake or something like that i think…

@marissa…I’m with you 🙂 My FH and I are doing it for the same reasons as you…especially because I got a really really cute tossing garter that came with my garter!

I am so not doing a garter or bouquet toss. I think they are ridiculous, humiliating traditions.

I am going to wear a garter, though. Just because I want to.
