My husband and I have photographed a cocktail reception for a couple that got married in Mexico. I don’t think it’s uncommon!

We are having a photographer b/c my 93 year old grandmother who can’t travel to our wedding will be there and we want photos with her.  However, the potential difference for us is the 2nd reception is in a small rural town…so the price for a local photographer is MUCH cheaper to the point of not being a budget issue.

i don’t think it’s weird at all- i’m debating having one for just a short time – say 2 hours.
