How young is young? If they’re under a year old, no big deal. But between 1 and 2 there’s always the chance that they could parrot it. And after 2 they’re talking! So DEFINITELY would have an issue with that.

I would have no problem asking family not to swear around my kid. And if they didn’t listen, then they don’t get to see the kid!

@sunelake27:  The way I would handle it is to pause the conversation for a moment and say, “excuse me, but could you refrain from using adult language around our kids? We don’t want them to repeat those words and get in trouble at school.”

I know it’s uncomfortable, but it’s easier to deal with this than the fallout (teachers, other parents, etc).

Personally, I don’t have children yet. But I am always cautious of my behavior around children. I try hard not to cuss (although it slips out now and then) and I won’t get drunk or do other things that the child could misunderstand. I think grown up things should be left to the grown ups, not done in front of children.

Nope, I definitely wouldn’t be okay with it. I feel like it’s bad manners and not the kind of environment I would want my child in.

@gingerkitten:  I think that’s how I would deal with it as well.

I’m not ok with anyone EVER cursing a lot in regular conversation, kids or not.  Save it for when you’re in a really intense situation that warrants it.  I find it vulgar and unnecessary to curse in everyday conversations.

I think it really depends on the age of the child…If they are talking…absolutely not.  If it’s an infant? Not really a big deal in my opinion.

Absolutely not OK.  Dealbreaker. That person would be invited to leave and they would not be allowed near my child again if they could not acquire  a filter. As for parents who do this in front of their kids, I think it’s disgusting and harmful.

Obviously, if it was a one time slip I’d have a conversation with the person.  But if it were persistent, that is another story.

@lollygagon: +1.  I also don’t have kids yet but try to clean up my language & behavior around children.

@sunelake27:  Oh no! I read your topic and as soon as I saw it I thought NO! But then I accidentally voted yes, whoops! 🙁 I will admit that not having kids yet, there have been a couple of times where something has slipped around some of my younger cousins but I felt absolutely terrible afterward!

You’re the parent so you should just say hey, he/she’s copying a lot of what we say these days so can we try not to cuss in front of him/her? It’s not rude imo.

I don’t swear anyway, so I don’t really see what the big deal is. Your life isn’t enriched by those words and I don’t know why you would need to expose a child to that.

This makes me feel like a poohead because we went tobogganing on a busy hill with TONS of kids on boxing day and I totally screamed out “SHIT!!” as I barrelled down the hill watching myself slide towards a “jump”. It slipped out and I left right away hahaha
