I have tons of kitchen supplies and lots of fancy china (handed down to me from other women in my family- my grandmother, my great grandmother) and silver. BUT what I don’t have is crystal. My mom is obsessed with the idea that I NEED to register for crystal. I can’t imagine I would ever use crystal. What do y’all think?

I registered for crystal dishes that I could have used for candy/goodies/display. They were pretty and could have used for decor, but they were discontinued, so no one bought me any. I DID get a crystal vase from a good friend of mine’s mom which I use as decor.

I didn’t but I still got a couple peices from the older family members. Right now our crystal wine decanter is sitting in our fridge with the wine we lost the cork to and needed somewhere to put it… And our silver 3 compartment serving dish wound up the the spave under our toaster (which is raised up on a wire rack thing to make cleaning easier) and catching crumbs. We will never use these things IRL!

I inherited some really beautiful, valuable crystal pieces. I’ve used them as table decor, centerpieces and they’re on display, but I’ve never actually USED them.I really do love crystal though.
A crystal vase also leaks because lead crystal is pourous, so make sure to never put flowers in it on a wood dining room table or you’ll get a ring.

@Mrs Hedgehog: LOL. Yeah my mom thinks I need crystal wine glasses/ water glasses. UGH!

- Wedding: June 2012 - Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards
My mother’s family is Irish. We are genetically predisposed to love Waterford. 😉
Seriously, though, my mother and aunts had me pick a Waterford pattern when I finished college and they’ve been giving me the pieces ever since. My aunt told me that she bought me service for 10 when Waterford announced that it was moving its factories to Eastern Europe. I have most of it and I imagine the rest is coming when i get a little closer to our wedding.
If you can’t imagine EVER using it, don’t register for it. But, this is the sort of thing you probably won’t buy for yourself, so if you anticipate hosting holidays in the future, you might want to register for some.

Nope. Don’t need it, it’s not practical for our lifestyle, it doesn’t match our decorating style, and the last thing we need is something else that will break. I’m sure we’ll still get a crap ton of it from FI’s extremely traditional family for Christmases and birthdays, so we’ll still have it, we just don’t particularly want it.

Nope. Our wedding is small and crystal is expensive so I’d likely get a few pieces here and there and have to fill in the holes myself. I have no desire to spend money on crystal at the moment- we’ll never use it.

I didn’t register for it and ended up getting a bunch. If you think you might want a few pieces and would never buy it for yourself, you might as well add a vase or something to your registry. If you think it will be stuck in a box, I wouldn’t worry about it.

@Pupperoni: Yeah. this is what I’m thinking. at least I would have some control over what crystal I got then. It seems like a lot of people are just dead set on buying crystal for a wedding

No. My aunt has offered us her beautiful crystal and honestly we just don’t have any need for it.
Nope–I would never, ever use it. I don’t think my mom has used hers in the last 15+ years, if ever.

Nope—we wouldn’t use it, and we wouldn’t have any room at the moment for anything in our kitchen that we aren’t going to actually be able to use. As an added bonus, I am clutzy…so it probably wouldn’t be a good idea anyway! I do love the way it looks though!

Nope – I’d never use it. Not even when hosting holidays in the future. So I figured I’d rather have people buy us things we’ll actually use and enjoy than crystal that will sit on a shelf in a cabinet.

I was given my grandmothers crystal (water goblets, wine glasses, champagne glasses, cocktail glasses, and more) not realizing nearly how much there was when i said i’d take it. it’s nice but we havent used it and i dont know when we will. maybe a little is nice if you like to host a fancy dinner party now and then but their is really no need for a full set.
