We did a casual welcome dinner and drinks two days before the wedding for anyone we knew who came to town already – it was mostly just close family that came from afar at that point. Then we had the rehearsal dinner the night before and that I was insistant on my inlaws inviting everyone that was coming to town to – they sent out invites and all. Then there was the wedding and reception and brunch the following morning.

Basically, we went destination and people traveled from all over to come and celebrate with us, and they were only the people closest to us, so it was important for us to spend as much time with them as possible. It turned our wedding into a weekend event and it was the most wonderful experience and memories. Your actual wedding goes by so quickly that all of these extra events really make it so you can spend time with these people.

That said, I don’t think you need to do welcome dinner and rehearsal, but one of the two would be nice. I’ve traveled far for weddings and while I was thrilled to be there, I was also pretty disappointed that the only time I saw my friends who were getting married was at the wedding when they had 100 other people vying for their attention as well.
