I’ve never seen a poll like this and I’m curious. My parents have been married for over 40 years….actually everyone in my family is still married. I was the first to get divorced.
DH’s parents divorced when he was a teen and everyone (and I mean everyone) in his family is divorced…most divorcing while their kids were teenagers too. All his friends’ parents divorced while they were teens.
Everyone I’ve known over the years either got divorced before they had kids or waited until the kids were (almost) adults to divorce….their reasoning was that they had kids right away and “lived” for the kids and once they were (about to be) gone, they realized they didn’t love/have anything in common with their spouse….which is essentially the reason that my Mother-In-Law gave for leaving Father-In-Law….she constantly tells me to make sure to put the marriage first.
DH’s parents didn’t have money, drinking, drug, abuse problems….just Mother-In-Law decided he wasn’t “there” for her enough emotionally. What were your parents’ reasons?

I think my mom is the main person in my family that has gotten divorced…my dad was not the greatest. Nobody in SOs family is divorced

My parents will be married for 34 years this year and all of my aunts/uncles are still married except for one. On the flip side, my SO’s parents are divorced (his mom is going on divorce #3), all of his aunts/uncles are divorced and the only one of his siblings that’s been married is now divorced as well.

They’re still married, but might be getting divorced. They haven’t decided. They’re not happy for sure. Sorry to be the “other”.

My mother died when I was young, since then, my Dad has been divorced twice. When I was 18 and a couple of months ago, so when I was 23. FIs parents are happily married, 30+ years (I believe, Fiance is 28 so at least that long!)

Still married, and like Jacqui90, 25 years next year! No one in my family is divorced, actually. My SO’s parents are still married as well, but one of his aunts and one of his uncles are divorced, all when the children were very young.

my parents have been married for 27 years, and my FI’s parents 29 years. nearly all our aunts and uncles are still married too! 🙂

Mine are divorced. They seperated when I was 12 and finalized the divorce when I was around 16. FI’s parents are also seperated. I think he was in his late teens when they seperated.

My parents divorced when I was about 8 years old, they both remarried about 3 times each, all ended in divorces. I divorced my (ex)husband early last year. My older brother divorced his (ex) wife when his own daughter was about 11 years old. SO’s parents are still married to each other, but this was a 2nd marriage for both of them. So yeah…..divorce is nothing new to me, sadly.
