My mom told me when I start taking prenatal vitamins that my hair and nails will be thick and beautiful. I’ve been taking the prenatal vitamins for over 2 months.
My hair is staying the same but my nails are more brittle and keep breaking.
What to do, what to do? Suggestions?

@ajillity81: HAHAHAHAHA! Yup I hear ya! I’ve said the same thing! 6 months in and I see no difference in my brittle thin hair or nails. Maybe my nails are growing faster, but nothing crazy. In fact my hair seems to breaking more! Every time I brush, uh I though your hair didn’t fall out during pregnancy? Hmmm, no.

thanks. sucks i guess. i wasn’t too concerned about my hair, although i would love my fine hair to be thicker. i’m most disappointed that my nails aren’t better. maybe it is just an old wives tale.

I didn’t notice a difference either.. but my nails are already pretty strong and my hair grows like a weed all the time….

Me too sister, me too. I guess pills don’t make up for genes.

I’m in the same boat. Sigh!

I actually noticed the change/improvement after 8 months. My BFF however never saw any improvement.

@ajillity81: Yeah I have been taking them for months and no difference. My nails grow faster, but they are just as brittle if not more brittle and my hair is the same. SMH

My nails were always weak and brittle, prone to splitting and peeling, and I have definitely noticed that they are stronger over the last several months.
Maybe different people’s bodies respond better to different kinds? Have you been taking the same kind all along?

My nails are growing faster, but they don’t look nicer than before. I haven’t really noticed a difference in my hair. I agree with PP that ever body is different. Sorry they’re wrecking your nails. 🙁

i’ve been taking them since october and have seen zero difference! i’ve also added B6 and that’s supposed to help with metabolism but i haven’t seen a change.

I’ve heard, but don’t quote me, that it is the pregnancy hormone that makes hair and nails grow. Of course, vitamins are always good! I noticed no hair or nail improvement while taking prenatals while TTC but have noticed a huge difference now that I’m pregnant. Some women have their hair fall out while pregnant, and someone just told me most women lose tons of hair after birth. 🙁

When my daughter was born, I had a set of ten beautiful nails, long and healthy. Never before in my life and a few months later, back to the usual. Ugh.

@ajillity81: It’s not actually the vitamins that do this, it is the pregnancy. Hormone changes accompanied by the increase in blood volume and vasculature that a pregnancy creates promote hair and nail growth and strength. If you are still TTC, that’s why you haven’t seen any changes yet. You should once you are pregnant.

I took prenatals all 9 months of my pregnancy and the 4 months after when I was breastfeeding. My nails still looked like crap. Nothing can overcome my genetic propensity for horrid nails. Thanks a lot for that gene, Dad!
