I posted before about how I’m thinking of a career in art therapy (I’m finishing up my bachelor’s in Psychology) and kind of being torn between doing that verses doing something more “practical” I guess for lack of a better term.
I absolutely love art therapy from what the classes I’ve taken and the side research I’ve done about it. If money were no issue, that is exactly what I would do for a living above anything else.
BUT of course money is an issue. So I’m curious for those who have or know of someone that has gone into Art Therapy about several things. For one, I’ve heard it’s hard to get alot of funding for schools where it’s offered as a masters, I already have undergrad debt so I’m wondrering how those of you who did it managed it?
Also job market wise….is it really that bad, did you have difficulty finding work? I’ve considered even being a full time counselor and doing art therapy groups or part time work on the side if it’s that hard to find work. I’ve heard some people teach art classes at the community college level or psychology classes as well as an option.
Salary wise, I’m not asking anyone to share anything they’re not uncomfortable with, but I hear so many figures. I’ve heard 35k all the way 80k being within normal range. So for anyone okay with sharing I’m curious to know how much you’re making out there. A big fear for me is having 70k in student loans by the time grad school os done with and only making 30k a year and not being able to manage.
Thanks in advance!
