That isn’t weird, I have a friend who let her bridesmaids chose a black dress. The only thing I would suggest is that you may want to decide on a style or length.

I think its an awesome idea. My friend was a Bridesmaid or Best Man in a wedding that did the same exact thing, except with chocolate brown dresses. Everyone was much more comfortable and looked great.

This is what I will be doing. I don’t feel like my girls should have to shell out money for some taffeta disaster that they will never wear again. The LBD is a wardrobe essential and everyone already has one they love, or this will give them an excuse to get one!

I am also doing this. I feel terrible asking my girls to spend $100-150 on a dress that they may never wear again.

i want to do this too, so yes! if i do it, i’m going to request all cocktail length and maybe some material guidelines, like all cotton-blend or all satin (probably not satin, but you know) or all chiffon… so that they photograph the same.

sounds like a great idea ! you can even tell the maid of honor to wear another color and let her choose the color!

Sounds like a good idea! If it were me I’d probably give them a few options, and have them run their picks by me before then made a purchase – but that’s just me. If you don’t care about cohesiveness than go for it.

I might be doing this too, because my girls didn’t order their dresses in time.  Delivery wouldn’t be until after the wedding, so we are looking for new ones now.  They are all different sizes, 0-plus size.  Finding one they all like is challenging and we just won’t have the time to get everyone together.  Because of that we are going with black dresses with similar material and the same length, whatever style they want.

@babybluz: totally! i’m doing it precisely so i can have them carry bright flowers and they’ll stand out instead of blending in 😀

Not a problem at all as long as you are comfortable with it.  I would personally prefer them all in the same type of material or some commonality rather than for eg, a short strapless black satin dress on one and another in a long sleeved lace black dress but whatever you fancy 🙂

I am doing this also. I think it’s a great idea. My Dad, says it’s morbid but what does he know? lol I think it’s very classy and will look nice without asking them to fork over so much $ for a dress to wear probably once. I am going to do the short length thing since the wedding is outside. Hope it works out for you too.

I’m doing the same thing, except we’re doing navy blue.  I’m taking each bridesmaid shopping individually to help them pick a dress.  That way I still have some say in it, but ultimately they get to pick something they like and are comfortable wearing.
