I was under the impression that groomsmen/bridesmaid gifts are typically given at the rehearsal dinner.

Oh.  The engagement party should be fine then.

You can really ask them whenever; I asked all of mine over the phone (ended up leaving voice mail for all three of them) since they all live out of town.

I threw a lunch for my girls this Friday and then asked them. I wouldn’t do it at the engagement party, because it might hurt some feelings. I would just think about your friends and then decide. Maybe you could invite the future bridal party over early? You also wouldn’t want someone you ask to feel awkward to be asked at the party with the extra attention. Again, it really depends on your friends.

@CheriAnn23:  i think you should ask them in a more private setting.  you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings if they are not asked and they see you asking others.

If its at an engagement party people may have had a bit to drink. This is never the best place to ask. Coffee with friends or a small dinner party might be a good setting. I suppose I was lucky I had my bridesmaid planned at the age of 4 and she just assumed she would take the role. Although, she did anounce it while drunk and a few faces were pulled. Foot in Mouth
