My boyfriend and I have been looking at engagement rings styles for a few months now and he finally is ready to buy. I’ve always been more partial to a princess cut but suddenly I’m finding myself very interested in an asscher cut. It’s beautiful and it doesnt seem as though I would need to worry about snagging or scratching anybody or anything as much as I would with a princess cut, which is my main concern. I know that with an asscher, clarity is key, which immediately ups the price. From what ive gathered, they also don’t appear as large. He is looking for anything between 1-1.5carats, and under $8000. Anybody have any experience with an asscher? Or any recommendations, opinions? I would appreciate all i can get, he wants me to make a decision ASAP!

I’ve actually had both. My first marriage I had a carat princess cut solitaire. Now in my current marriage I had one for a quick minute but I no longer have it. I LOVED my princess cut! It never snagged on anything that I can remember and I have rough clumsy hands so I don’t think you should worry in that department. Actually I just asked a similar question to ladies who own marquise or pear shaped stones and mostly they said it depends on the setting. The princess cut is faceted which means it will sparkle more than the step cut Asscher. Have you considered a radiant? Ipersonally like it more than the princess simply because when I compared them side by side the radiant took the cake sparkle wise. Also it has the chipped edges just like the Asscher and Emeralds do (I believe).
Now about the Asscher’s they are also very beautiful and unique. Your information is correct about the clarity and size of them. I personally could not own one because I have OCD and it was very hard to keep clean and always appeared dirty in my experience because it is almost like a step cut piece of glass. Have you tried them on? The radiant and princess can appear larger if you choose arectangular princess or radiant. My princess was rectangular and I loved it. Here are some pictures for inspiration. They are all so beautiful but from the two you listed my first choice would be princess BUT I love the radiant much more!

My FI’s Grandmother had a beatuiful Asscher cut diamond for her wedding band ( he proposed to me with it) The cut and style of a true Asscher will cost you, but in my opinion they are the most beatuiful diamonds. If the Asscher is out of your range look for a emerald cut. Most jewelers are carrying Asschers now becasue it new populartiy. When it comes down to it its your ring, you have to be in love with it…sometimes at a price.

I have an asscher and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have a 1 ct solitare and the clarity is either flawless or one step down from flawless. My Fiance said he could have gotten me a 2 ct princess for about the same price so they definitely are more expensive but, in my opinion worth every cent. I have never noticed a 1 ct asscher looking smaller than a 1 ct princess though since they have the same general shape. Everyone that has seen my ring just adores how clear it is and how you can see the steep cuts on the inside. Another reason I prefer the asscher is because it’s different but, that’s just me. Almost everyone that sees my ring either has never heard of an asscher or never seen one in person.

I like both! Do you have ideal/specific rings in mind that Bee’s could vote on?

I meant to include some pictures I have taken of my asscher over the past year. They are all cell phone pictures so the quality isn’t really that great. Here ya go!

I have a princess and want an asscher but they are too expensive for the size and clarity I want

Would you consider a cushion cut? It will give just as much brilliance as princess (comparing to asscher), but won’t snag or scratch easily…

Have you seen them in person? You might want to, to really decide which you like better. I have a princess and have never had problems snagging it on anything. The prongs cover the corners, so I doubt it’s much different than an asscher in terms of that. I really like asschers, but I went with the princess because it is much more sparkly imo. An asscher is a different type of beauty. In terms of price, the princess is probably slightly cheaper, but I don’t think the two cuts are that different as long as you are comparing equal quality diamonds.

I have been searching for this ring. Do you know where this photo came from?

I did a google image search for it and looks like it was an antique ring for sale on a site called Topazery. It has long since been sold, but here is the link: http://www.topazery.com/antique-jewelry-item-rg1081.htm
