i am doing an at home reception for the same reasons. i wasn’t planning to have one either but now i am because so many people could not come including FIs sister and 2 of my BMs.

for my AHR we are doing a backyard BBQ party at either my parents or sister’s house.  I also plan to have a cake and use the same topper i am bringing to my Destination Wedding.  My BMs will wear the dresses again and I will wear a white summer dress.  Also we are going to put on a slide show our pictures from Jamaica.

Well, I’m doing a home reception but not because of a Destination Wedding….just cause we’re plain broke lol. Since Im Cuban, everyone loves the idea. We’re basically using my aunt’s backyard and the chairs are scattered around like at a normal party, so no centerpieces required. Some of our family will be making the food, the cake will probably be made by a relative too (although we have a a cheap bakery in mind just in case), and the decorations are simple—white christmas lights and tiki torches which will be lit at night. Overall, my reception will cost $350 🙂 You just have to know where to cut and how to substitute.

@StaceyMay81: digital frames! i like it!

i am asking my BMs to wear their dresses because they are short and summer-y. i myself will wear a white summer dress, but not my actual wedding dress

I once saw a blogged wedding that was a pot luck picnic in a park with really cute blankets and such. You could do that! I thought it looked way fun and cute!

I think a BBQ in the yard is a good idea… cheap easy and fun.

My reception was in our home.  The weather wasn’t nice yet so we couldn’t go outside.   I had a few key people gift me large quantities of food in lieu of a wedding gift and set up a buffet on the kitchen table.  My step mom and best friend took care of refilling the buffet table.  I made a cupcake stand from styrofoam purchased at Home Depot and placed 120 cupcakes from my local grocery store on the stand.  The cupcakes were a HUGE hit.  No one believed I got them from the grocery store we all shop at!  Everyone mingled throughout the house in the living, dining, and family rooms as well as the kitchen.  My hubby had background music playing.  It turned out better than we thought it would!  Everyone had a great time.  My only expense for the reception was the cupcakes, stand and few decorations which consisted of silk flowers in vases with tulle bows here and there.  I don’t think I spent $100.

If someone has a big backyard you could use that!  You could do a potluck or maybe just get appies from Costco.

If you want to get catered, I know someone who had a pasta restaurant just cater pasta, buns and salad.  Very cost effective and delicious 🙂
