My last trip will be for Thanksgiving at 30-31 weeks. I think I’m done traveling more than an hour away from home until baby comes.

My last trip was at 32 weeks and we were about 5 hours from home. I’m now 36, almost 37 weeks pregnant, and I can tell you that I would not be comfortable being more than an hour away from the hospital. I have had some symptoms and feel like I could go into labor at anytime. I also would not be able to sit in the car for 4 hours at this point. It was very hard for me to sit in the car for 5 hours when I was 32 weeks.

I travelled a couple of hours away up until the end in each of my pregnancies. I would say I didn’t go more than 4 hours round trip though past 37 weeks. If you did decide to go and your MD oks it, just make sure you know where the nearest hospitals would be along the way:)

The last time I flew was at 32 weeks but it was only an hour flight. I don’t think I could have done anything much longer just because I was so uncomfortable sitting in those cramped seats.

A road trip might be different. My friend did a road trip with her Darling Husband and 2 friends visiting from France at 36 weeks. They drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles, taking the scenic route and stretched out the 6 hour drive to like 10 hours – taking lots of breaks. They stayed in LA for about 3 days and then drove back up. She was ok with the trip because she had no signs of early labor and was going to a familiar place (she used to live in LA) and even knew which hospitals she would feel comfortable delivering at should she go into labor.

So I think it’s something you might have to play by ear. If you feel like baby is not budging, it might be fun to make the trip. Drive slow, take lots of breaks. You’re going to see family so I’m assuming you’re familiar with the area? And you would have lots of support should you happen to go into labor while you are visiting!

It’s *generally* safe to travel at 36 weeks but it probably won’t be comfortable for a substantial drive unless you take lots of stops.  Yes, emergencies can happen but are uncommon and as long as you have copies of some key paperwork (blood type, recent ultrasounds) and you know where the hospitals are en route, it would be fine from a medical perspective. My opinion, anyways 🙂

Perhaps your family can travel to you this Christmas?

One OB at my practice told me not to travel after 32 weeks and another told me 34 weeks was okay. I was 33 weeks on our last road trip– 8 hours in one day. Yep, that was enough!

Honestly, you’ll probably be super uncomfortable, but I might go if I were you. It’s Christmas with the family…

I took a short flight from Boston to Myrtle Beach when I was 30/31 weeks and I was comfortable enough but by 36 weeks, I wouldn’t have wanted to travel. At that point, my feet were starting to swell immensely, my blood pressure was creeping up and all I really wanted to do was rest.

@SaraP2012:  I will be 35w at Thanksgiving and will head an hour home for that, but that will be my last trip away from the city. I will be 39w at xmas, so def not leaving.

Talk to your doctor. Houston isn’t the backwoods, so you would be perfectly safe to deliver there if you would be ok with that being an option.
