We waited until 24 weeks to buy the furniture. We just wanted to be sure that all was ok and we reached viability!

Before that, we bought nothing. Even now…we aren’t really buying much even though I’m almost 32 weeks. We’ll probably start to look for a few things here and there once my shower is over.

We plan to wait until viability.  I don’t want all of that baby stuff lying around if I miscarry or there’s something wrong with the baby and we need specialized stuff.  I will probably keep it all in the garage or at other people’s houses as well and not decorate the nursery before 30 weeks or so for the same reason.

We had said 12 weeks for small items…well, Darling Husband caved at IKEA on Saturday and bought a little light fixture.  I’m almost 11 weeks, so, whatever.  If something happens, we’ll tuck it away or give it to Goodwill.  We will definitely wait until later on for bigger items, though.

I started about 16 weeks.  Just little stuff though with the exception of the crib (which Father-In-Law got for us).

@funkymunky85:  I’m actually due at the end of September, and my shower is in the middle of August. So I’ll do an assessment then to see what we have or don’t to get our big stuff then! Oh…we also bought our stroller already too. It was a $400 BOB and I didn’t want anyone to have to pay that…so it was our treat to ourselves :o)

@funkymunky85:  In America it’s common to hold the shower before the baby is born.

We bought our cloth diapers at around 5 months, but held off making any bigger purchases until 6 months. We might have started earlier but we were in a temporary living situation and wanted to wait until we were back in our own space.

@funkymunky85:  I didn’t realize it was more common in Canada to wait until after the baby is born! I know some women here do it, whether for logistical reasons, religious (I’m not Jewish, but I seem to remember hearing they believe it’s bad luck to buy anything for the baby before it’s born…), superstitious reasons (similar to the last reason–bad luck), or that the baby just came early! I’ve learned from these boards it’s called a “Sip and See” (AKA getting to have an adult drink and meet the baby).

Do guests still bring gifts? We received a lot of stuff for our nursery/baby gear at ours.

Darling Husband and I didn’t buy anything for the baby until after our gender scan. We then bought clothes and all cute little accesories just because we were excited. We went shopping for furniture around 20 weeks, furniture is not something I would personally put on the registry. We have ordered all of our furniture and hope to have it by the end of this week, I am 27 weeks now.

I would recommend not buying anything you would put on your registry until after your shower unless you get a great deal. I will still have 7 weeks after my shower to go and buy anything I needed that I didn’t get.

We are going to start at 12 weeks but will wait until we know the sex at 20 weeks to buy most things as for us the sex does affect what the pram and room decs etc look like.

I’ve started shopping for myself already – maternity bras, maternity dresses and mini shampoos etc for my hospital bag, pregnancy and baby books, mini fan, foot cooling spray for my handbag etc.

I LOVE organising so I’ve already made a spreadsheet of everything we need organised into categories and every time I see something I like, I paste in the link to it so I don’t forget 🙂 We first need to clear out our spare room before we can shop anyway so there’s quite a bit of work to do before we can fill it with new stuff.

I will openly admit that our little coco has a closet half full of gender neutral onsies that I have collected over the past 10 years – all under $5 a piece lol.  (I have REALLY wanted a baby for a long time, obviously).  I’m only 11w4d now, and we’ve got some random items.  A babyfood processor (bought on sale), a diaper bag (sale), and some stuffed animals.  What can I say – I love a sale.
