Just a random curiosity. My husband mentioned that at 6mph he had to go into a jog on the treadmill and that 5.8mph was his awkward pace that falls between fast walk and jog. I go into a jog at 4.5 mph and 4.3 is awkward for me.
What about you? What speed to you start jogging at?

I’m doing a “couch to half marathon” program because I am NOT a runner, and right now my run speed is 4.5. My fast walk is 2.5-3.0 and anything between 3.5-4.4 is awkward for me.
I’d imagine it’ll change when I get a little better, though.

No idea what actual speed in miles, but my day to day tra la la walk is pretty much a powerwalk/light jog. People have refused to shop with me because I’m so quick. My actual “jog” is a run and my run is a sprint so I’m going to assume pretty fast!

When I do run, its around a 5.2MPH. I have freaking long legs, so anything slower and I look like Quasimodo trying to get my groove down.
I do run intervals though. 3 minutes run, 1 minute walk.

mrsfiddlesticks: this 🙂
I’m 5’9″ so 4.5MPH is a brisk walk for me! People always tell me I walk too fast lol.

mrstbone: May I ask your height? I’d think taller=longer stride=faster walking pace. But maybe there’s more to it than that, like conditioning, as you said. I’m going from couch to…(not sure what) too. I became skinnyfat over the past two years or so. In fact, I’m flirting dangerously with losing the skinny part of skinnyfat! Time to get it in check.

RedheadMeggs: Ah ha! This is telling. I’m 5’9″ too but have proportionately short legs. 4.5 is definitely a casual jog for me. But I’ll be interested to see if it becomes more walkable as I improve my fitness level.

I’m not sure exactly, since I haven’t ran on a treadmill in a long time, but I go into a jog at a fairly slow speed, since I’m a bit short (5’4) and I feel like it’s more efficient exercise because it’s more movement.

mrsfiddlesticks: if have to get up to 5+ mph too for a proper run. But the 4.5-5 range is more than a walk.

passthepeas: Lol! I’m trying desperately to train for Tough Mudder, but right now I don’t even think I’d get to first 2 miles.
I’m about 5’7″. I could probably manage the fast walk at 3.0 and the run at 4.7/8ish but I’m not sure I’d survive the full 30 mins.

5.0 is a jog for me. I’m short (5’2”) and don’t walk particularly fast, but I run at 6.5-7.0.

mrstbone: Well good luck to you! Omg I just looked Tough Mudder up – “a 10-12 mile obstacle race designed by British special forces” holy cow, I would/could never! Color me impressed with your goal!

passthepeas: I agree, 4.3 is awkward, but is still somewhat of a fast walk when I am at a 0% inclone, if I have an incline, 4.3 is more-so a jog. 4.5 at no incline is a jog for me

I’m 5’5″ and 5.0 is when I start jogging. For me, 4.5-4.9 is that awkward pace between walking and jogging.

I’m 5’9″ too and I would say anything under 4.8 is walkable, quite brisk beginning around 4.2. For me, anything over 5 is a jog and anything over 6 is a run. Hope this helps!
