I’ve been on Atkins before.  I loved it back in college because I would lose a lot of weight quickly, but my cholesterol shot way up.  It’s not a diet I could sustain, and whenever I stopped, I would put the weight back on.  occasionally if I want to lose 5ish lbs, I’ll do the first few weeks of Atkins to jumpstart, but I can’t usually do it much longer than that.

Atkins is one of those diets that once you go off of it you gain back all the weight you lost (typically).

I’d suggest just exercise and eating healthier.

Hmm.. the best thing you can do is go on a diet of 1400 cals. I’d say 300 for breakfast, 300 for lunch, and 400-600 for dinner and 2 100-200 cal snacks. Its easy if you buy low fat/low cal replacements for most of your usual things. Use 0 cal butter spray instead of any other kind of butter, vinager for salad dressing with no oil, and lean meats/fish, get 45 cal bread instead of high cal kind, just look for the lowest calorie everything and try to keep it below 1400 cals a day. Get in some aerobic (about 45 min a day) and most importantly, do strength excercises to build muscle, because that will raise your metabolism super fast. Also, don’t ever drink calories, except for some lowfat milk, replace soda with diet soda, and keep track of your calories in a diary. If you do all of this, you should create a calorie deficit of about 1000 cals, which will lose you a lb every 3 days, 10 lbs a month = 20-30 lbs before your wedding!

The Atkins diet is completely unhealthy… all that meat. yuk!

I recommend Dr. McDougal’s plan. A low-fat diet is the way to go..

I have lost 50 lbs doing kinda of low carb weight watchers! I count points but I don’t eat bread (not even whole wheat), I eat wasa Light and Crisp cracker bread, low carb tortilla wraps, and I found some low carb pitas at the farm market so I don’t even miss regular bread. I eat lots of veggies and whatever meat I want. Other things I don’t eat……….carrots, potatoes, rice, no junk food, beverages with calories and fruit. I have been doing this since July and I can’t say I never eat these things I have a cheat day once a week and allow myself to eat something off of my no no list but I don’t go crazy. Oh and here is the bad part I don’t exercise I would be at my goal weight if I wasn’t so lazy! So basically I eat low carb and count calories! It works for me! And I’m not living on meat and eggs I don’t measure salads but I measure my salad dressing. I don’t measure other veggies either I just count what I add to them. I have tried atkins and couldn’t stick with it but i love the way i feel when I’m off carbs (after the first week, that first week is rough). Sometimes you have to tweak things to make them doable for you!

I tried the South Beach diet….I lasted 1 week.  I learned to love lots of veggies (I used to NEVER eat veggies except for corn and potatoes) and lost 5lbs in a week.  However, I lost LOTS of enegry by omitting all carbs and sugars – not good!   I am now attempting to lose 10lbs by excersing and eating fresh veggies and chicken.

One trick: drink 1-2 glasses of water BEFORE eating a meal – makes you feel full and eat less.  I always do this when I go out to eat – I drink 2 glasses and end of wrapping at less half my meal up.

Low cal low fat is the way to go and add a bit of exercise on top and you will be in great shape!

How much time do you have to lose the 20lbs? Your wedding isn’t until May? What about trying weight watchers and the 30-day shred! I lost 11 lbs so far, and I only started 6 weeks ago. The weight isnt coming off that fast, but it’s consistent.

Atkins is really not good for you.  Many people on the bee have talked about weight watchers or Nutrisystem, which in my opinion is better than Atkins.  (Everyone in my family is a doctor but me but I do work in the medical industry)

I personally use The Daily Plate, part of Livestrong.com.

Good luck!

I’m starting atkins tomorrow. I read through their website and realized a lot of the things I knew about the diet were stereotypes or myths. There is a healthy and unhealthy to do atkins.

I was looking at a lot of labels tonight at the store, and never realized how many “low fat” or “low cal” foods I was eating that are filled with sugar carbs! I loaded up on salad, eggs, albacore tuna, veggies, part-skim cheeses, and lean meats. I know it will probably get a little boring after a while, but I’m optimistic.

Anyone else doing Atkins? Is it working?
