I see alot of posts where girls are saying the are NTNT (not trying not to try) and this along with another post made me think to post this very important message: Start taking prenatals now! Prenatals are ok to take even if you are not trying to get pregnant (via my doctor). Folic Acid is MAJORLY IMPORTANT TO BE ON!
I can NOT express how important Folic Acid is to early development in babies. Although they can’t find direct reasons for neural tube defects like Spina Bifida & Anecephaly, increased amounts of Folic Acid has been found to decrease the chances of these devastating birth defects. I was not prepared to get pregnant so quick & had not taken any vitamins before going off the pil…I just stopped taking it & then started taking prenatals but found out I got pregnant so quick! Unfortunately our little girl was diagnosed with Anecephaly at 18 weeks when we went in for our anatomy scan. This birth defect is fatal…babies with anecephaly do not survive outside of the womb…if they do survive delivery they might live a few hours.
So Please start taking Folic Acid NOW or at least make sure you talk to your doctor before going off pill to ensure you are doing everything you can for a healthy pregnancy! If you need more info on this please visit the March of Dimes website: http://www.marchofdimes.com/

It’s amazing what a little folic acid can help prevent. Thanks for this reminder!

I am very sorry about your LO–you truly have my sympathies. My sister had a baby born with that. She actually lived for a month.
I haven’t taken my pre-natals today so thank you for the reminder–I am usually religious about this.

I’m so sorry for what you are going through. You are very brave to be able to think about others during this time and remind them to take pre-natals.
FYI-they are also finding a link between taking prenatals prior to conception and lower Autsim rates.

From what I read, you should be taking prenatals a year prior to TTC. Basically, any woman in child baring age should be taking them just in case. Granted, I wasn’t perfect about taking them before, but something is better than nothing.
@shelbifox15: Thanks for reminding everyone. Hope you’re doing well.

Wow. Thanks for your post.
To add: my friend who just became a naturopathic doctor told me that ‘the pill’ robs your body of folic acid, along with many other nutrients.

@shelbifox15: I am so sorry for your awful news. You must be heartbroken.
But what you say is absolutely true – the minute I got engaged my mum told me to start taking folic acid, cos she, like others, had read that you should take it for a year before you even start trying.
I think the point that all women of childbearing age should take them whether they’re TTC or not is a really good one – accidents happen!
