My fiance saved for my engagement ring the day after he gave me my promise ring.  Took him 3 years to have enough to pay for what he wanted to buy.  We are getting married 3 months after I get my undergrad degree.  He will be done with school the next semster.  We decided for insurance purposes to wait until at least one of us graduated to get married.

We are paying for our own wedding.  Our wedding will cost just a little more than my engagement ring.  My dad is contributing to things he won’t let me go without or doesn’t want me to compromise-  My dress, shoes, jewelry, etc he will pay for.  He is also paying for our photographer.

We decided to DIY save the dates & invitations, programs, all stationary.  We are cutting out things we do not think are necessary that people “traditionally” do.  You really figure out what you want and what you can do without.

I also think where you live helps you keep your budget low.   I live in South Dakota and my best friend is getting married in Kansas.  Her budget is nearly 3x mine due to expenses there compared to here.

In order to save and have enough money to  pay for our wedding we chose to be engaged for 1.5 years.  It isn’t hard to save 4 grand in 18 months between the 2 of us.
