@jmarvellous: Ugh! We may be re-thinking this Austin thing. I just can’t help picturing 48,000 college grads and all of their riled up friends and families getting crazy up there. Not sure I’m prepared to fight the crowds. We may just be staying put in Dallas. 🙁

@Crazyhair: Well, to be fair, it’s 5,000+ grads, I think. Not all 48,000 graduate on the same day. As long as you avoid that area in particular, you should be fine.

@jmarvellous: have you thought about trying to rent an apt on
airbnb instead of having people stay in random hotels all over town? FYI in case you’re not super familiar with Austin but north of 183 is FAR from downtown – you will need to drive everywhere. I know a few people in ATX who list their places on airbnb when they go out of town for a weekend. Might be a great option to try to get your crew closer to downtown!
Also not surprised at all that hotels were booked by January for UT graduation. I told my parents ASAP (October? Definitely 1st semester sometime) when we knew our graduation date back in 2008 & they got into a hotel right downtown.

@k8: Thanks. I have lived here for a decade.
My mother, who is familiar with Austin, and 7 of her family members, are staying in the same hotel up north, incidentally less than 2 miles from our reception venue. The people on S. Congress are actually up for more of a hassle! Not to mention they’ve all had their reservations since February. No need for any help from me.

@jmarvellous: awesomesauce!
Def if you have any guests having trouble last min for hotel reservations that wknd airbnb is super awesome. I’ve been recommending it all over the place to people who are visiting Chicago this summer for things like Pitchfork and Lollapalooza & are shocked at the expense of hotels downtown!
