If you want fancy food in Melbourne, Try the press club or Maze at crown- Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant.

For a more relaxed lunch, try Sails on the Bay. Its a little cafe right on Brighton Beach.

Or come to my house, I cook a wicked roast lamb. 😛

lanany10, there’s the Sydney Tower Restaurant. The food is nice but the really great thing is the views. Try to get there around sunset so you can see the sun disappear off behind the city and see the lights come on. It’s really lovely.

Movida in Melbourne – beautiful spanish food!
I also second the press club.

Depends where abouts you are going too and what you want to eat… China Town in Melbourne has some fantastic places to eat that are delicious, Johnston St has some great spanish restaurants, Lygon St in Carlton has some good italian restaurants…

Depends if you want cheap eats or fancy!

http://www.yourrestaurants.com.au/ this website has a good list of the most popular, but urbanspoon is also a great resource!

Brisbane is great…you can then visit the Lone Pine koala sanctuary…….then you can also take a daytrip to the Gold Coast OR to the Australia (steve irwin) zoo…

I am from Australia and live in Townsville around 1.5hrs from the whitsunday’s and 4hrs from Cairns and reg visit both.  Airlie beach is the place to go in the whitsunday’s for perhaps a yatch cruise or something relaxing.  Cairns is the place to go to visit the great barrier reef and have a bit more adventure. If you go to Cairns, a visit to the daintree is a must.   Regardless of where you go in Australia you will have a great time.   If you need more info the whitsundays’s and Cairns have websites.

Depends on the time of year but as a Queenslander… Brisbane is ok but kinda boring; not too much for tourists really. The Gold Coast is only an hour’s drive south of Brisbane and the theme parks are OK (as is the shopping) but to be honest it’s not going to be much different to anything you can get in the States.

As a few other posters have said, go to North Queensland. You could base yourself in Port Douglas, a really cute village about 45 min drive north of Cairns, much prettier, you can still visit the reef and go to the rainforest and everything from there.

Melbourne and Sydney are great as well, and if you went to Melbourne you could hire a car and do the Great Ocean Road which is gorgeous.

My only advice would be not to spread yourself too thin if you want to relax – choose a few places only to visit if you have only 2 weeks. Also, if you are a foreign passport holder apparently you can get an airpass with Virgin Blue that gives you something like 5 flights for $500. Could be worthwhile!
