I found it was also quite similar to Fern Gully if anyone remembers that movie!

@bluebutterfly-that’s what I thought when I saw it too

It seems like James Cameron was just reworking a couple of other stories. My Fiance also thought it was a very political movie even though James Cameron said he’d been wanting to do this movie for a while but didn’t have the “technology” to create his vision.

Hahahaha that’s funny! it is like Pocahontas, but with a touch of Ferngully!  Avatar  even has the magic trees just like Pocahontas had Grandmother Willow and Ferngully could “feel the pain” of the tree stumps.

I saw one of those overlapping bubble graphs (venn diagrams or something like that?) One was Fern Gully, one was Pocahontas, and the overlap was Avatar.

I thought it was an amazing movie (and it is a somewhat classic storyline) but felt it was overly political.

@kjpugs – I agree it was pretty political, but it’s not as distracting as some other films.  For example, I just watched District 9 on DVD…talk about a statement!  Crazy!

Yes! This makes so much sense! I love both movies!!! Avatar was just down right awesome! I can’t believe that someone else thought about Ferngully! I think this post has inspired me to have a Disney movie weekend! Que up Pocahontas and Ferngully!

I’m so blind!  I can’t read it.  But without reading it you can see there are a lot of similarities.  But Avatar was amazing, and not for its unique plot (because we’ve all seen a bunch of movies that portray Americans as these greedy people that will destroy and conquer) but because of the visual effects.
