Actually, in Brazil it is customary that the bride walks down the aisle to Ave Maria.  I only know this because I’m marrying a Brazilian.  So I don’t think of it as a funeral song at all!

That’s hard to say.  Yes, it’s used in funerals, but I’ve seen it used in weddings. But it’s one of those songs that people react strongly to, because of that.   It’s kind of like “Amazing Grace” for me–I can’t hear it without tearing up bc it reminds me of funerals I’ve been to.

If it’s something you really want to include in your ceremony, go ahead.  I don’t think the song is specifically for funerals.

“Ave Maria” is NOT just for funerals! I’ve sung that song at many wedding ceremonies when the mothers are walking down the aisle before the mass. I think it is a gorgeous song and if you want it in your ceremony, you should have it!

I kind of agree with your mom. In fact that song was played at my grandfathers funeral and maybe that is why I agree.

However I think if you like the song and want it played at your wedding go ahead. It is your wedding day! I relate it to a funeral and you will/can relate it to your wedding. It is really just dependent on the person.

It is also on a lot of christmas cd’s.

Sorry but I am LOL that you will RUIN her wedding experience if you use that song.

It is definitely not just a funeral songs and I have heard it used in many weddings. We even sang it as a choir for my catholic high school graduation ceremony. It’s a beautiful song!

However, if your mom is stubborn and you really will ruin her experience if you use it, then I’d say pick something else. Not worth the drama.

I looked up the english meaning of the song, this may help you decide:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,Jesus.Holy Mary,Mother of God,pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.Amen.

Personally, I have sung Ave Maria at many weddings.  It’s beautiful.  I’m usually asked to sing it when the couple presents the flowers to the statue of the Virgin Mary.

Depending on the church you use, some priests will even tell you that it is a traditional and necessary part of a Catholic wedding.

We’ll be using it during the actual ceremony.  It is a magnificent piece of music.
