I seriously can’t believe some of these prices that BMs have paid 😯 I agree with PP, look at department stores. I’m Maid/Matron of Honor and choose my own dress and found one at jcpenny for $62 and I’ll have to buy some fabric to add to the dress. I did have to buy shoes though and I did buy a beautiful necklace to go with it. I plan on paying for my BMs dresses when I get married. My mom’s a seamstress so I *may* go down that route.

My answer might be interesting if not entirely relevant… These prices would be pretty low for the UK! I think average here for an actual Bridesmaid or Best Man dress is about £250 to £350 (about $310 to $435). My bridesmaids paid nothing because in the UK you buy your BMs dresses for them. My dresses were £160 each ($200) which I was delighted with! They were from a department store. The ones we tried in a bridal store were £270 ($335) minumum and they were not as good quality – fabric and cut weren’t as nice. I got two of the dresses 20% off which brought the average down to £144. I recommend high end range from a department store for quality and price. Alterations will need to be factored in too.

I paid around 300 for my dress and shoes. It was very much out of my budget and the bride never asked me what was an acceptable spending range for me. I would have loved to have a conversation about price with the bride before dress shopping. She picked out a dress and didn’t care what it costs. I would have liked to stay under 150 including shoes, but I understand being a bridesmaid doesn’t work this way. Good luck on your wedding.

My Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses were 230 including alterations. I expect to pay around 200 when I’m in a wedding.

I asked them for their budget and let them choose their own dresses in the right shades. So I decided to pay for anything that went over $200. We all really liked these amsale dresses that were $280. Their budget was $200 so I paid the difference. It’s definitely possible to find affordable dresses though. Try Lulu’s or Asos.

My Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses for my wedding cost $90 CAN (around $70 US) including tax and shipping! And I haven’t asked them to buy any particular shoes or accessories. I have never been a bridesmaid (not yet anyways, youngest of my friends to get married), but would be really pissed off if I had to spend more than $100 on a dress.

As a Bridesmaid or Best Man, I got 4 free dresses (one was a rental) and 1 was $250.
My Bridesmaid or Best Man paid $170 and I paid $100 for each as a supplement (total $270)

Thanks everyone for your help! Totally agree with everyone who recommeded I ask the girls what their budget is before I get too far- I just like coming prepared with estimates and knowledge as I know I would ask it I was a Bridesmaid or Best Man haha
Super appreciate all the responses and suggestions on where to start looking for affordable dresses!

I paid $280 for the wedding I am in in October.
For my wedding I picked a designer and a a color and material from that designer and let the girls pick a dress they picked best. It helped the girls who are tighter on cash since they were able to pick a lower price dress if they wanted. I think the dresses my BMs picked ranged from 160-235.

Kiyasea : I’ve only been a bridesmaid once, and our dresses cost $270 plus alterations. We BMs all agreed that the dresses were way too costly but didn’t say anything to the bride.
My BMs’ dresses were $90-$100 and the only one who needed alterations had a family member do them for free, which was lucky. ETA: My BMs’ dresses were short, which probably helped them be cheaper.

As a bridesmaid I’ve always expected to pay about $250 including alterations. I’m estimating it will be the same for my bridesmaids. Their dresses were around $160 USD, with taxes and exchange (we’re Canadian) they probably ended up costing closer to $200
