I do not know what the average here is, but I would say that in my social circle it is at least 1.5 ct.  I have a .5 ct.

@Clairetoris:  My social circle = lawyers.  Most of my friends/ people I spend time with are lawyers, as I am.   I got engaged at 20, though, so our financial situation was a different one at the time, and now I just do not care enough to upgrade.  I rather take exotic trips.

I live in a pretty affluent area in my city and I would still say that less than 1 carat is the norm.

@Clairetoris:  Congrats!  I am sure everything will work out for the two of you, and that you will get a lovely ring.  As for my ring, yeah… I just never gave much thought to the whole ring thing, and I was happy to get whatever.  We have been together over 7 years now.

I live in a big city (population: 6.5 million) and I’d say my 1 carat is average, especially since cities are mixed income. I take public transportation and haven’t seen many big rings during my commute.

In my neighbourhood and at my local grocery store, however, my 1 carat is simply dwarfed. In my social circle, my ring is also quite small. I don’t think it’s necessarily the carat size, but the fact that I have a very simple setting as well. A 1.5-2 carat in a full pave setting seems to be the norm.

@Clairetoris:  yeah, I know some older people that farm, and I’m sure their net worth is mind blowing, but they drive an old Ford or Buick and live in an old farmhouse, and you would never know. Most people where I’m from don’t upgrade rings. People tend to be pretty conservative spenders, and definitely so with “stuff.” Conspicuous consumption isn’t common.

Of all the people I know, my 1ct princess cut diamond is the largest solitaire/center stone, but I know a couple of people who have a larger total carat weight (my stepmother and Future Mother-In-Law both have trilogy/3 stone rings with a half carat center stone, and slightly smaller side stones).

I live in probably the most laid-back capital city in Australia.

I live in the rural MidWest in a farming community. I would say the average center stone size would be about half a carat. My 1.09 gets a lot of compliments because it is big for the area. My husband has a half carat dimond in his ring as well. BUT, some of the wives of wealthy farmers that I work with rock 2+ ct rings. Now those babies are impressive!
