DC is much more expensive than my area, so I think you’ll get a lot of variation in your poll responses based on location.

I personally like the taste of buttercream frosting better than fondant.

I can’t help. I’m between DC and Baltimore and the quotes are about $500-$600 for a cake for 70 people. =/ so… about $7.00iss per slice. And we’re talking plain! It’s insane.

I think fondant is also around $1-2 more per slice than buttercream.

wow, that’s expensive! cakes around here typically range from $2.50-$4.50 a slice, i think $6 was the absolute highest i saw and that included a bunch of extras. i’m getting my cake for $2 a slice (with buttercream frosting).

I actually didn’t pay per slice… it was included in my cost per person for the wedding (included with the food). The baker had a contract with the place so it was all included. The cake tasting and cake itself was AWESOME. We got to have 4 different flavors even. I’m sure it was expensive.

I was in Denver, but the cost was not that outrageous. Maybe look just outside the DC area and try to find a place that is cheaper, but then you may have to pay more for trucking it to your venue…tradeoffs :

I hear this alot on here, the cost of cakes being so extravegant, and I’m not surprised.  Alot of people (no, I’m not saying you, I’m saying in general) think “I can buy a cake mix and frosting and it’ll be under $5 – why is this so expensive?!?!”  The reason is labor cost.  Even if your baker is working by herself, there is the cost of rent, overhead, and then paying herself.  And in a metro like DC, cost of living is high, so it’s passed on in the cost of the cake.  Plus, alot of bakers are bringing in specialty ingredients for wedding cakes – vanilla beans (not extract), meyer lemons, blood oranges, etc., are not cheap.

Mine is included from Carlo’s bakery with my venue so I am not sure of the price, but I will probably be going with buttercream and minimal decorations to make sure I won’t have to pay extra

Our buttercream cake (in NH) is running around $4/slice for 90 servings; with the cake topper, it comes to $390.

We live near Boston, MA and ordered a handpainted fondant cake with 130 slices for 150 guests (we still had a TON leftover so i would suggest lowering your guest count when you request a cake quote) The cake was $850 including delivery.
