I am looking for a wedding band in DC, but I’m lost at where to begin with pricing! If it makes a difference, we will be getting married in a church so the ceremony music will not be neeed – only cocktail hour and reception. (I am interested in having a string quartet during the ceremony, however I’m sure that the church will have its own musicians).

We paid $9,600 for ours…6 piece band performing from 5pm – 12am.

I would guess that it totally depends on where you are and if they are a wedding band vs. a touring band. I had quotes upwards of 9k for an 8 piece wedding band, but am going with a 6k touring group who rarely do weddings.

The cheapest we saw (in person – band showcase) was $6500 for 9 pieces. That was for a 4-hour reception, with 2 musicians playing for the cocktail hour (only one, 20-minute break, during the entree course, so the band could eat). It was also quoted in the fall of 2013.
We also only looked at bands associated with a booking agency, so that we could see 3 or more in one evening. From talking to independent bands, their prices were supposedly lower since they didn’t have to pay a booking commission. We ended up not hearing any of them, since they only had- in general – one or two open rehearsals a month, which never lined up with our availabillity.
Daughter #2 ended up booking an 11 piece band, for $8500, but that was 2 years ago. Daughter #1s wedding was 3 years ago, with a larger band, and extended reception; therefore, the cost was higher.

We had a awesome 9 piece funk band with full horn section for 4500. That includes their 650 travel fee from out of state. Including dinner music (low key, no vocals) and a rowdy reception. We had a different (bluegrass/string) band for ceremony/cocktail hour. I contacted them directly- no booking agency.

We just got a quote of $12.5K for an 8 piece band with singers plus a string quartet for ceremony & cocktail hour. This included a travel fee (~150 miles). The band is based out of NYC. Yeowch.

All about location. They aren’t really a thing here. You can get a string quartet for 1,000 from 2 PM – 8 PM.
