I’ll be getting engagement photos done in the San Francisco Bay area in the Spring. I’ve looked around and found some great photographers, but I’m wondering before I choose anyone…what is the average cost of engagement photos?
One lady told me she started at $500.
My wedding venue is basically free, so I am willing to put a little extra towards engagement photos…but I certainly don’t want to go overboard either! 🙂

mine were free since they were taken by a friend – but most photographers have a package that includes the engagement photos or bridal session. separately its about $250, here in the DC area (so its a large city area)… not including actual prints. If it includes a few large prints then its more aroudn $400-500….

I looked for photographers that included engagement pictures as part of their wedding package. We were lucky that our fave photog included the engagment session. Plus it’s a really good way to gauge how much you like the photog and his/her work. At least if you HATE the E-pics you might still have time to cancel and find a new wedding photog.

We paid a professional, but non-wedding/couple photographer $200. He spent 5 hours with us all around Manhattan and was quite a trooper because we are exhausting people to tail. He charged much less than wedding-type pros with similar experience because he didn’t have the wedding markup but was looking to break into it.
His picture quality was amazing (because he’s a professional and not starting out), but he wasn’t good at giving us direction (because he’s not a couples photographer). If you and your fiance are outgoing and have a bunch of poses and props and you know you don’t need much direction, then you can save money by hiring a pro non-couple photographer possibly looking to break into the wedding scene. We definitely were a bit shy and could have used some direction, but we saved a ton of money and got some great pictures.

I don’t know about your area but the prices I’ve seen are around $250 including pictures on a CD, and prints are additional. Starting price of $500 sounds pretty expensive to me.

We are from the SF Bay Area, the photographers we’ve seen quoted anywhere from $300 to $600. If you are getting the same photographer for your wedding photos, you could either negotiate to reduce the price of the engagement session or some photographers will throw it in your package.

I cant say i know the average price. i will most likey get mine for free or at a discount since ive modeled in the past and therefore know many photographers. if you want to save money though you can always hire someone just starting out. also you could browse photogrpahers in your area on modelmayhem.com, they are model photographers but many do wedding related photoshoots as well.

I’m not sure how much you’re willing to spend, but I got mine for a whopping $50.00. The lady who did our e-pics is a photography student, and wanted to use our session as a learning experience as well as for her portfolio. She did a really good job with us and and spent 3 1/2 hours with us. She’s also including 2 11×14 prints along with a CD of the photos. I thought it was a deal we couldn’t miss! Before I set-up with her though, I looked at some samples that she had already done.
You could check out our pics from my handle. Let me know if you want more information on her.

- Wedding: June 2010 - Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house!
Ours was part of our package, but usually about $200/hour. I think. I could be making that up though. :p

In the Seattle area, they seem to average about $250/hr.

- Wedding: June 2008 - Winery in the Gold Country
$200ish an hour sounds reasonable to me. Our shoot was included, but we spent about 2.5ish hours shooting so I’d say around $500 sounds decent. I’d probably look for something in the $400ish range.

Ours was complimentary with our wedding day package. We took our photographer out to dinner though as a thank you, so it cost us about $45!
Honestly though, a photographer should charge around $175-250/hr. Do you have a wedding day photographer though? A lot of photographers will throw in the engagement session with the package.
