@LivyLovesPonies:  I think the average is somewhere around $1400. How much you spend on a dress should only depend on what you feel comfortable spending.

Can you tell us which dress you are considering? Maybe we can help you find a less expensive substitute.

My dress was $299, but that’s not including alterations or tax.

I’ve got two dresses- my ceremony dress is my grandma’s so it’s free, but i’m paying just over $200 in alterations. And then I have a $200 budget for my ceremony dress, which is going to be a tea length tulle dress. Probably made in China, because I’m so picky.

But I now $400 is not a normal budget for two dresses haha.

But yeah, show us the dress, and we can maybe find some similar ones for cheaper!

I’d say $1500 not including tailoring costs Laughing

My dress is Mikaella, their gowns start at $1250, made in Canada. High quality fabrications with impeccable attention to detail, styling, and fit. Check them out http://www.mikaellabridal.com/

Mine was about $2300, not including alterations. But only you can decide what is most important to you. I decided I wanted a super unique, showstopper dress so that’s what I bought. Some girls will get the $500 David’s Bridal dress and buy a new pair of Manolos (because you can at least wear those again) or get an ice sculpture or put that money toward a stretch Hummer or something. It’s all about priorities. There’s a recommended percentage, but it’s your wedding.

My budget was around where yours was and I spent $1000 on my dress plus another $250 in alterations, $50 crinoline, $50 on a bra, less than $20 on my veil (which was a steal), $40 shoes, and like $50 in accessories.  I guess just remember that there are alot of additional costs that go with a dress (alterations, undergarments, accessories) and so you need to budget additional dress funds to cover that as well.  Now I’m not the best at budgeting and I’m not sure how much is the correct percentage of the wedding budget that should be towards the dress, but with the additional costs that I can think of, I think that dress price is a bit high with a $20K budget.

@LivyLovesPonies:  What HappyBride said. mikaella is PB’s cheaper line so they may have a dress similar to the one you like for less.

Asking the average price of a dress is like asking the average price of a car or of a house. It all depends on what the definition of “is” is and It all depends on what is “average.”

So far, my dress is $769 including tax, after a 40% discount.
