@UpstateCait: Well, I guess she is lucky that way. I am an extremely opinionated person and any person who is part of my life knows that if someone was to make a comment to offend them, I’ll be right there to back them up. Cati, you should know  the attitudes that of men from upstate NY.  I lived there for 30 years.

We currently have an upgrade on layaway there for our June. 24th 10th year wedding anniversary and I have been nothing but pleased with Zales’ customer service even before purchasing anything there. I can’t wait to pick up the ring within the next few months and for the price we are paying, I can’t expect perfect. I would recommend Zales. The important thing is that you research your ring first, ask lots of questions and don’t buy on impulse in my opinion. I have been making payments since April of 2011 and everytime I go in to make a payment and I see my ring, I fall in love all over again, and everytime I try something else on, it doesn’t compare, not the least bit. XO

There are 5 Zales stores in my area alone and there were 7 total (2 closed)…so I really don’t think they are in danger really.

I compared Zales prices to Blue Nile and they are slightly higher but not by much for a diamond of the same specs. I just got a celebration diamond from there as an upgrade and everything went as smooth as I hoped it would. It seem like the bigger Zales stores have fewer hick-ups

I agree. I have a Zales ring as well (and love it) but will never shop here again. I had my ring independently appraised for my homeowners insurance and it came in $500 less than what we paid which doesn’t include the 2 .2ct vintage (pre 1920 cut) diamonds we provided.  I have been going back and forth with the DM for over a month to no resolution. I love my ring but fear I may return it as I don’t like to support businesses who conduct themselves this poorly. Oh and not to mention my fiancé thought he was saving nearly $1k because it was “on sale”.

I proudly say I got my ring from Zales. It is 3/4 carat Clarity is I. Customer service was fantastic. I got a beautiful ring for a good price…it sparkles endlessly. Jared, kay, and JB Robinson are all one in the same. Zales and Gordons are the same. I agree you should always research what your purchasing no matter what it is. I went to multiple jewelry store in my area. All had basically the same inventory expect Zales gave me a better deal.

I understand what you are saying. I worked for the company for MANY,MANY years, I know all the ends and out. Just read my story. I am not “out to get anyone” I just want people to know what happens in more stores then just one.

I worked for Zales Jewelers for several years, and I feel you are operating with some bad information.  First off, it isn’t standard for a so-called mall jewelry store to have a microscope.  Any diamond key holder should have a loupe, which should be offered to the customer during the sales presentation.  Most people don’t know what to look for when they are buying a diamond for the first time; it is the sales associate’s job to make sure the customer understands that each diamond is unique, and inclusions aren’t necessarily a bad thing.  The pattern of inclusions in a diamond are that diamond’s fingerprint, so to speak.  Also, a certified diamond is not necessarily a better quality diamond.  Most diamonds you will find in a solitaire will be tagged with a minimum grade.  That means that if you go to a gemologist and have it graded, the color and clarity will be at least the tagged grade.  A certified stone has already undergone that grading process, and the color and clarity of the stone is specifically noted on the certificate.

The bottom line is, the ring you got from Zales was most likely a stock item that had a minimum grade, not a certified stone.  The inclusion was there when you bought it, but for whatever reason, you didn’t notice it until you got it home.  Perhaps the sales associate didn’t offer the loupe to you.  Personally, I always pointed out the inclusions because I would rather lose the sale than have a big fat return because my customer didn’t like the stone.

I have a Zales ring. I love it of course, it’s mine, but my experience wasn’t all that great either. No, they had no microscopes or anything at the store. Honestly, at the time neither my Fiance or I knew anything about diamonds or rings or what to look for. I think my ring looks sparkly, so I don’t mind much if it doesn’t have the best quality stones. I didn’t get any of of certificate. I didn’t even know that anyone did. If I had never come on this site I probably would have never found out any of this stuff about diamonds. I always get it checked every six months like I’m supposed to, although honestly they don’t do more than glance at it. When shopping for a wedding ring to go with it another store put it under the microscope for me and showed that one of the diamonds was crooked. I went back to Zales to see if it could be fixed since I figured it has some sort of warranty. The one princess cut diamond is crooked adn one of the other prongs are messed up. Zales wants me to send it out with them and pay more money to fix it :/ . They also blamed me for the diamond being crooked and were really rude and pushy about it. FI was upset and thinks there is no way I could have accidently moved a diamond. I really don’t know. I’m still not a diamond expert.

this reminds me of blaming the waitress for your steak being overcooked.  Imo perhaps the sales rep isn’t educated on diamonds either.  Maybe she didn’t know what to show you or whatnot.  I think it depends on the store, the sales person, and the customer.  Too many factors to blame it all on the company as a whole.

We bought both my engagement ring and wedding band (and his) at Zales, and we have had no issues what so ever. We bought a 3 ct engagment ring and a 2 ct band and we do our cleanings and checks and I have also had them both appraized and put on our house insurance and there were no issues. Our Zales isnt closing, we asked a few years ago when we first heard that. If you go to snopes.com it has some stuff on it. (Also everything I have read so far is alread out of date as far as closing the times have already passed). I think there were a few stores that closed in certain areas but not the chain itself. Like I said ours are all open and they said they were not closing( we have two here in our area) the cut and clarity on my rings are excellent. I have bought several rings before and since then and have never had a problem. I have even returned a ring and the amount put toward another bigger ring. I def would and will go back to them again.
