I struggled for a long time to think of a great gift to present to my fiance on the day of our wedding. Cufflinks are out b/c he’s not wearing a shirt that requires them, he already has a watch, a pocketwatch is a nice idea but wth would he ever use it for? (he’s not much for sentimentality, so if I give him something with an intended use he better darn well be able to use it), etc. Then it came to me – I’ll comission a custom drawing of the two of us with a ton of personal details drawn in! I thought of a bunch of little things I could add into the picture to make it really represent us, our relationship until the wedding, our marriage, and our future together. I’m really excited about it and I know he’ll love it.
But I can’t draw and I can’t seem to find a good artist. This is clearly a big problem for my gift idea.
I’ve looked on Etsy and I found one artist who does this but they only do digital drawings and I’d really prefer something hand-drawn and “organic” looking rather than something digitally created (although I’ll go that route if I have to). I haven’t had any luck finding an artist on Etsy that does hand-drawings of a custom scene – I’ve only found artists who hand-draw based off of existing photo portraits and things. I’ve googled also but come up empty and/or way out of my affordable price range (I can’t afford a $500 drawing).
Anyone know where I can find an artist to comission a custom drawing like this?
Edit: It doesn’t have to be a very realistic representation of us, I’m okay with “Cartoon-style” or even “Comic-book style” renditions vs. “Human” if that makes any sense.
(If anyone thinks this post would be better served in a different area of the boards, please suggest it and I’ll copypaste. Thanks.)

@BeeEuphoric: I don’t know any artists, but I think that is a really fun and meaningful idea!

@BeeEuphoric: I know a few people who are involved with another forum I frequent. Give me a second to grab their store links.
This woman did a custom drawing from a picture of my husband’s dog for our monthaversary: http://www.etsy.com/shop/aphotica (She’s a WONDERFUL person. I adore her.)
Another, she does stunning work. I know her “personally” from the forums, but I have never commissioned her: http://www.etsy.com/shop/helloheath?ref=si_shop
Here is another, she will be making my wedding topper (It will be a figurine, not some of the work in her Etsy shop): http://www.etsy.com/shop/RisaRocksIt
I can personally vouch for the validity of these people. They’re very real and very dedicated to their craft.
I’ll update if I find any more.
Edit: One more, she offered to do artwork for my parents for our wedding: http://lozartist.deviantart.com/

Do you have a local art school? Or local college with an art program? I bet a student there would be able to do somthing like that for you, and could add it to their portfolio so double win.

I would post in the Craigslist section of major cities who have big art schools (San Francisco, New York, Providence)
Some starving artist student will be able to help you out for sure.

Try http://www.deviantart.com/ Find someone whose style you like and see if they’ll do a comission.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!
I actually found an artist on Etsy called “Lefffty” that I’ve comissioned for a very reasonable price, and she’s incredibly talented, I’m so excited to see the finished product!
