Did you sign a contract yet? If yes, I would read that carefully, if no, there’s no harm in asking.

Check your contract. You will probably lose your deposit but policies vary.

Did you sign a contract when you booked and put your deposit down? It should state in there if you did what their policy is on returning deposits in case of cancellation. It will depend on that I’m afraid. There’s certainly no harm in asking though, especially if you go into it expecting nothing. Say something like “this venue was exactly what I imagined for our wedding. Unfortunately, as the planning has continued, our wedding has evolved in both theme and esthetic, and it no longer fits my wedding-day vision, I was wondering what your policy is on cancellations and the return of deposits”.

I agree with PPs – you need to look at the contract you signed.  You will likely lose your deposit, plus you might have to pay a cancellation fee depending on their cancellation schedule.  If you’re okay with losing the deposit, then definitely approach them.  If you’re not, read the contract carefully!

As PPs said, check your contract. The way our contract worked, it was a 100% refund if they could rebook the date, and then 60% if canceled by a certain time, 40% for the next time, slowly decreasing until right before the wedding.

deposits are rarely refundable, especially with less than 4 months till your wedding

you can try, but dont be disappointed if it doesnt work. good luck!

A lot of times what they’ll do is keep your deposit until they can find someone else to rent it to for that date. That’s a good middle ground to request since you’re just haggling without a contract.

OK, if you do go with this new venue do yourself a favor a get a contract and also dont pay with cash. Credit cards are best (can get your money back if they move, go banrupt, etc) and checks are behind that as you still have proof that they received $$.
