For the last few months or so I’ve been getting random IM’s from a girl that I went to high school with. We were “friends” but to be honest, I never really cared much for her.
It all started one day a few months ago while I was at work. I got an IM from her that just said “Hi”. I thought it was a little strange since I haven’t spoken to this girl in like 7 years but I replied back with “hey”. She then responded with “a/s/l? I’m 24/f/NY”. I was totally taken aback so I didn’t reply. I figured that she would get the hint that whoever she thought she was talking to wasn’t interested and just move on but nope… I’ve been getting random IM’s from her a few times a week. Normally they’re just variations of “Hi” or “Heyya” but sometimes she throws in some winky faces for added awkwardness. Her away messages are always super suggestive which makes it even weirder. “Lick it like a lollipop ;-)” and “Looking for some fun? Give me a call!” are two of my personal fav’s.
I plan to block her but should I tell her that it’s me? I’m sure she’ll be completely humiliated (who wouldn’t be?) but maybe it will teach her that suggestively IM’ing random people on your buddy list isn’t the best of ideas. She also just updated her FB status to “In a relationship” so I’m not really sure why I’m still getting these IM’s. Maybe her new beau isn’t doing it for her, lol.
Weird. Very Weird.
ETA: Oh also, my screen name is a female cartoon character so there really is no way that anyone, even a complete stranger, could think that the account belongs to a man.

Wow, that is weird. How well did she know you before? Either her account got hacked into, or she’s trying to flirt with you. Either way, just block her. I wouldn’t bother trying to communicate further if you’re no longer in contact. I’d prob just be too awkward.

wow that is really strange. i think i would tell her who you are for sure. I am really curious to see how this turns out, keep us posted!!!

I’m pretty sure she’s been hacked.

Completely off topic is your avatar YOUR cat?? Too funny!! I just noticed 🙂

Yeah, I’m thinking she was probably hacked as well.

I bet money it’s been hacked – I have a friend on my msn like that – it occasionally pops up links like “hey look at these crazy pictures from you last night” etc.

I agree that its probably been hacked, this is happening more and more these days with IM

Yeah she probable has a virus. I’d block her and don’t respond to her IMs. A few of my co-workers (no longer with the company, but I never removed them from my IM list) got a virus and randomly I got IMs from them that said: “Click here for my nude pics.” It was actually kind of hilarious.

@UpstateCait: is it through yahoo? Perhaps her account was hacked. I get those all the time from random people and one time I was getting them from a friend’s account that she hadn’t logged into for awhile and porn bots took over.

Oh yeah, block her and I’d send her a FB message to let her know. I’ve had it happen with friend’s with old email addresses they don’t use any longer… they had no idea.
(still LOLing at the lollipop!) 🙂

I initially thought she was hacked as well but she is “24/f/ny” and I’ve never gotten any “check out my pics” type of IM’s from her. All of the IM’s are either some variation of “hello” or winky faces. Could it still be a hacker?

@UpstateCait: Definitely hacked. It’s a very clever trick, people are getting more wise about spam, so most hackers know not to send out blatant spam messages. Rather, they make it look like an IM that could potentially be from a friend. If you’re a girl, you’re likely to open a “hi” message from another girl you know. If you’re a male, you might be more inclined to respond to a wink or a a/s/l message. Hackers don’t know who the messages are going to, so they will try multiple variations. Let her know she’s been hacked so she can change her password.

Yeah. Silly hackers are getting all smart and stuff. 🙂
