What’s wrong with it?  Is it sexual in nature?

Nothing’s gonna harm you, not while I’m around.
Nothing’s gonna harm you, no sir, not while I’m around.

Demons are prowling everywhere, nowadays,
I’ll send ’em howling,
I don’t care, I got ways.

No one’s gonna hurt you,
No one’s gonna dare.
Others can desert you,
Not to worry, whistle, I’ll be there.

Demons’ll charm you with a smile, for a while,
But in time…
Nothing can harm you
Not while I’m around…

Not to worry, not to worry
I may not be smart but I ain’t dumb
I can do it, put me to it
Show me something I can overcome
Not to worry, Mum

Being close and being clever
Ain’t like being true
I don’t need to,
I would never hide a thing from you,
Like some…

No one’s gonna hurt you, no one’s gonna dare
Others can desert you,
Not to worry, whistle, I’ll be there!
Demons’ll charm you with a smile, for a while
But in time…
Nothing can harm you
Not while I’m around…

If it’s supposed to be him talking to her… it’s sweet… if it’s her talking to him… I see how you might be reading into the lyrics that she’s trying to keep him as a mama’s boy/saying you’ll leave him eventually, eeek.

I feel like it’s a good sentiment of how a mother might feel about her son, but I guess a couple of lines could be interpreted like “even if your wife deserts you I’ll still be here”?  I don’t find it offensive really.  If it makes you really uncomfortable just get your fiance to help her pick another song and tell her he doesn’t like it.  How much does it bother you?

For those who don’t know, it’s from Sweeny Todd and it’s a woman singing to a little boy (not a mother son, but she has no kids and he has no mom, so it’s a maternal relationship).  To me, it’s a weird choice because she’s comforting the boy when he’s scared and he doesn’t have anyone else to go to, so the lyrics are all about how the world is a big evil place, but she’ll protect him from all the bad stuff and everyone who wants to trick him and hurt him.  At your wedding, your Fiance  shouldn’t be scared, and it’s not the place to talk about all of the demons out in the world.  And it does come acoss as a little possesive, imho.  If I were you, I’d ask them to pick a different song, but just focus on the fact that you want something more upbeat, rather than the fact that you’re not comfortable with the “mom’s the only one you can count on” sentiment.

I think it’s strange. Doesn’t convey much confidence in the marriage he’s entering with you.

Uh, yeah, that song isn’t really a great song for a wedding…more like for a divorce.  Maybe you could tell them you watched Sweeney Todd and that the woman is thrown in an oven in the end and the boy cuts Todd’s throat and now that song really gives you the creeps.  They might consider changing it if you don’t make it seem too much like it’s all about how creepy the lyrics are…

I can kinda see why that song doesn’t sit well with you.  I’m really really into lyrical content, so I scrutinize a song before I choose it.  In this case, it can easily be misconstrued.  And its not like she or your husband can make a quick announcement to clarify the songs content before they dance to it.  I’d probably just mention something in passing and hope it lands, I wouldn’t insist on them changing it.  It could turn into a big deal pretty quickly.

That’s more like a Prelude to a Divorce song… if I heard it at a wedding, I would think the mother was against the union.

You might mention that to you Fiance and see if he’s considered that.  If it’s not the case, he probably wouldn’t want that to be portrayed.  Is there a reason she chose this song?

that is hilarious!!! Well, its a woman singing the song, so I would take it that its the Mom singing to her son!

Can you say “Momzilla??” lol. Change it. Change it fast, or you will have people rolling on the floor!

if you’re uncomfortable then say something. Maybe suggest a song that is “more like them” or something.

Yep, inappropriate.  What are you doing about it?  The reason I ask is that Fiance wants “My Girl” to be played for him and his mom.  Clearly, I can’t wait for that.
