I wasn’t necessarily planning to share this, but I think our story is pretty unique, and I thought some bees might get a kick out of it 🙂
Our son was due on April 7, but throughout my pregnancy he measured ahead. I always had a feeling we would have a March baby, but everyone told me it wasn’t going to happen bc it’s rare to go early with your first.
At 37w6d I saw my MW, and asked her to check how far along we were. I was hoping to be 1-2cm, and was very surprised to learn I was already 4cm dilated and 75% effaced. We did a membrane sweep, and she warned that baby could come as soon as that night.
We’ll he didn’t come that night. Or the next. Or the next. By 38w5d I was doing every home remedy: spicy food, pineapple, long walks…and I scheduled another sweep for the next day.
That afternoon I took the dog for a long walk. When I got home, I was playing with the dog in DH’S home office, and when I stood up, I peed my pants! ….but then the more I moved around, the more I peed. And I couldn’t stop it. It took us a few minutes, but we finally realized: my water broke!
By now it was about 4pm, and we paged the midwife. My birth plan was very loose: I wanted a hospital birth with the drugs. The MW said she’d come by to confirm my water broke. While we waited, my contractions started. DH was timing them, and right away they were less than 5 minutes apart, and almost a minute.
The MW arrived at about 4:30, and by the time she got everything set up, etc it was about 4:45. She took me upstairs and confirmed my water broke, and told me she was going to see if I was 6cm so we could go to the hospital.
I will never forget the look on her face when she told me I was 9.5cm, and she could feel his head poking through. I wasn’t getting any drugs, and I wasn’t going to make it to the hospital.
Then things happened really fast. My mom ripped down our shower curtain, and towels were laid all over the bed. I didn’t want to push, because I wanted to go to the hospital, but my body literally just did it against my will. Ambulances were called, and after about 5 or 6 pushes, our son Austin was born on my bed at home at 5:39 pm on March 30th. Two hours after my water broke. He was 7lbs14 ounces.
We were able to have about 10 minutes of skin to skin, but I had a third, bordering on fourth degree tear, so we had to go to the hospital. Bizarrely, the ambulance didn’t have a car seat, so my husband packed up our 15 minutes old son in the carseat, and drove him!
So, basically even though I didn’t have a birth plan, the two things I wanted, I didn’t get. But look at that face!
