Hi Bees, I was just wondering what you think of this.
An old friend of mine just posted a picture of her baby boy on Facebook – plus a link to a competition page where she’s asking us to vote her baby the most beautiful out of hundreds of others.
I had a quick peek at this contest – it’s run by a company that sells baby stuff, the prize is a hell of a lot of baby stuff, and the entrants are limited to a maximum age of 18 months.
Am I the only one who finds this distasteful?! All babies are lovely, right? Isn’t it a bit weird to compare them like that? On the other hand, maybe this is totally normal and I’m overreacting. What do you think?

@TopazTurtle: I dunno. I think it’s one thing to enter your kid into a contest like that (fair enough, it would make a cool story when the kid’s older and you’d win a lot of baby stuff)… but a whole different kettle of fish to get into the Toddlers & Tiaras type stuff. I find THAT distasteful. Dragging the poor kid around and not letting them have much of a childhood to fulfil some weird fantasy the mom may have.

@canarydiamond: I guess so, T & T is a truly horrible show – but with this, it’s like, how are the parents going to feel when nobody votes for their baby?

@TopazTurtle: I guess it’s a risk they’re willing to take lol.

Some of my FB friends have done this and I always kind of roll my eyes and don’t vote. Every mom thinks their kids are the cutest (I know MINE are!), but seriously- not all babies are that cute. I think it is fairly harmless though.

Eh I don’t think anything of it, hey if you can win a lot of baby stuff because people think your baby is the cutest why the heck not.

They do this for weddings too. It’s like a huge social media pyramid scheme. Entering seems harmless enough…you just submit a photo…no dancing or baton twirling. But then you have to recruit friends to vote and to vote they have to like the page…< the marketing scheme
So, personally I hate these things…but if it were a straight up legit enter once, random name drawing thing, I think those are pretty fun!

Haha it’s totally just a popularity contest — obviously people don’t vote based on how cute your baby is; they vote based on whether or not they like you enough to click on a link on facebook and go through all that rigamarole! So I’d never enter my baby in such a thing, mostly because I know my friends are at least as lazy as I am. I guess if you have click-happy friends then it’s worth a shot to get a bunch of free stuff!

@eeniebeans: +1. Thank you for saying that. I was debating how to phrase “not all babies are cute” without actually saying it. But you said it for me.
It sounds like, in this case, they just want some free baby stuff. Unlike the T&T show, sending in a picture won’t harm the baby psychologically. I don’t see it as a big deal. Too bad furbabies can’t win – then I would win because obviously my baby is the best 😉

I’ve also seen it from my friends on facebook quite a bit. I’m kind of annoyed by it because it seems to be happening a lot lately. Obviously all mothers think their baby is the bee’s knee’s. But I’m not going to go out of my way to join some site to vote for the kid. It just bugs me that they’re bogging down facebook. What’s wrong with just posting a cute picture of your baby like everyone else and not harassing your followers to vote for something every time there’s a new cutest baby contest somewhere.

I might enter to win the prize but wouldn’t share that on FB and ask for votes… I feel way to embarassed to do that…
