If all goes as planned, we’ll be homeowners before we’re parents. We REALLY do not want to have a baby in an apartment for many reasons but mostly because we feel like it will be much harder to get to the point of home ownership after having the financial burden of a child. We certainly won’t be TTC until after we’ve purchased our home but if an accident were to happen, we’d deal with it.

Haha, yep! My fiance and I actually had a surprise pregnancy and then decided we were going to try for our youngest, who is now two, and we aren’t getting married until next fall. For us, it was more important that we had our daughter when we did than it was to be legally married right that moment. I doubt that it will matter to them or us, in the long run, that we shopped for a house after we shopped for their crib and they will probably think it’s pretty cool that they got to be in our wedding pictures. Some people just do things outside of the box.

As for your situation, the average, healthy couple takes like 8-10 months to get pregnant, so you’d possibly still be homeowners by the time you got pregnant, plus the 9-ish months before baby.

We’re already homeowners, so I guess it’s irrelevant, but I do like knowing that we have a home that is ours before we had children. There’s just something oddly comforting knowing that our first child (or two) will come home here. I just bought a 4-door car (had a 2-door) and it was cool to think of the fact that I’ll put a carseat in there someday too. I’m kind of weird? Lol.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with renting with children. I do know that I would have hated it in our particular apartment we used to live in, especially since it was on the second floor, but if we rented a house or townhome that would have been fine.

I think it’s totally doable and fine to have a baby before owning!

Owning is so outrageously expensive where we live (think fixer upper two bedroom for half a million) that almost nobody owns before having a kid. We’re *this close* to a down payment so we are holding off on kids until we’ve got that secured. At $1500-1800 a month for daycare, we know we won’t have the ability to save a ton after they are here, so we’re making sure the down payment is in line first!

@Pokemon:  I definitely think it will be harder to save after baby! Everything about babies are expensive….actual birth, childcare, healthcare, essentials. They’re not cheap, lol.

Yay for mom cars! I love mine. ๐Ÿ™‚

@crayfish:  I think fairy princess land just died a little in my head. That is insanely expensive. I would never be able to own in that case! Still recovering from shock…

@AmeliaBedelia:  FYI, I just read your words as, “I don’t think there is anything wrong with renting children.”  Ha!

@crayfish:  I hear ya, we’re in the south bay. However, we’re still holding out. I think we can do it. My mother isn’t appreciating the wait, but so be it. Another 3-4 years I hope. Good luck with your downpayment saving!

We are renting with our first baby on the way, and we will probably have baby #2 before buying our first house.  We don’t see having children and owning a home as competing goals, because we are planning and saving for both, although baby costs do eat into the house saving a little bit.  The timing of buying a house depends on a lot of different factors that are hard to predict, so we didn’t consider putting off having children because of it.

@Pokemon:  Lol, “Just have them back by 4 or there’ll be a fifty dollar late charge.”

@Juliepants:  & @Pokemon:  Haha! I think I would prefer that. I can give them back when they misbehave then, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Is there some sort of warranty or guarantee with these rentals?
