I would never use it, because I live in the South. I really, really do not like how it sounds with a southern accent.

My fiancé and I love Hank as a nickname for a potential kid.  We’d name him Henry or Harrison of course.  We love King of the Hill and think that name is so cute for a toddler/preschooler.  We’re fron New York though, so I don’t think anyone would mistake him for a hillbilly, they’d probably just think it was ironic.

My FI’s father was named Hendrik and called Hank. It’s a cute nickname, but I don’t love it as the actual name.

Though of Jim Careys mean alter ego in “Me Myself and Irene.” I’d pick another.

To me, it’s a very American name. Not that there’s anything wrong with it (since I assume he is American!), it just means it’s quite limiting if he ever goes abroad, since the stereotype of Hillbilly Hank is probably the only exposure people have to the name.

If he comes to Britain (and I imagine most European countries), pretty much no one he meets will ever have met another Hank. So whereas a lot of bees here have said “Oh, a lot of people will think of the Hanks they know, not the stereotypes”, that just isn’t true abroad. Likewise, we aren’t really aware of hipster baby name trends in the US (lol), so Hank is pretty much only a hillbilly name, we wouldn’t recognise it as an ironic Brooklyn name!

Just something to consider, although it might not concern you. I’d definitely go with Henry, and then he can adapt it if he feels the need to. You never know, he might HATE the name Hank himself!

@meetmethere2013:  I am not pregnant either, but DH’s favorite boy’s name is Hank as well!!  Henry is a family name on my side, so he says we need to have a Henry and then he will go by Hank.  He says it’s manly.  I think it’s stupid.
