@MissTiramissu: I am a strong proponent of letting the child decide and here’s why:
When I was young, I was a holy terror of a child. My parents had trouble getting babysitters for me because I was so awful. The first thing that made me start to modify my behavior was the incentive of getting my ears pierced. I wanted them pierced sooo badly! My mom made up a system that I had to get 100 points to earn getting my ears pierced. I would get points for good behavior and lose points when I was bad. It took me an entire year to earn 100 points! But it worked! My babysitters all commented that I was a completely different kid, and that was the start of my transformation.
Now, I’m not at all implying that your kid will be like I was. But as you said, this sounds like a decision that your child needs to make for herself. Maybe she doesn’t want her ears pierced. It may be perfectly normal in your DH’s family, but that’s not enough of a reason for you to pierce your baby’s ears IMO. I don’t see the harm in waiting until the kid is older to make that decision for herself.
