Hubby loves the name dorothy and so do I, trouble is our surname rhymes with this and also has the same number of syllables. I worry poor baby will be ridiculed or it will sound odd.
We also like Martha, olive and I love Nancy. Middle name will probably be May.
Any thoughts on dorothy or any other names in the same vein?

My great grandma was Dorothy Edith… Gertrude, Maude, Winifred, Edna, are all similar in style.

I automatically think of Wizard of Oz, probably because it’s my mom’s favorite movie. Viola, Audrey, Marilyn, Ruth, Margot.

Oh boy, if your last name rhymes with Dorothy, you should automatically cross that name off your list no matter how much you like it. Do not name your child a rhyming name, she will get taunted and teased her whole life.
I love Olive! Martha or Alice has a similar vibe to Dorothy.

I love Edith May (but I’m obsessed with the name Edith and think it works perfectly with May)! I also like the PPs suggestion of Alice May. So pretty. Lily May is also a lovely combination.
I don’t love Olive/Olivia simply because it’s so popular right now.
If your last name rhymes with Dorothy, I would steer clear of the name.
Martha May sounds very sing-songy but would be my favourite out of the names you listed.

I second Edith May! I would absolutely steer clear of any name that rhymes.

The mayor’s love interest on the Grinch (Jim Carrey version) was named Martha May. Just FYI since you expressed concern with ridicule. By that time those kids may not even know the movie anyway. My grandmother is Dorothy so I like that 🙂

Yeah I wouldn’t consider any names that rhyme with your last name.
Martha is a nice name.

I would never consider naming my child something that rhymed with my last name (though I don’t know if there is any first name that rhymes with my last name, and I am super curious what last name rhymes with Dorothy!). I love the name Olive but feel it’s pretty popular nowadays. Though I’m not crazy about Martha with May, Martha would probably be my choice for most like Dorothy.

Doris, Dolores, Doreen, Dora, Theodora and Thea are all very similar.

Not a huge fan of Dorothy, and I second PP about the no rhyming rule. “Julia Gulia” comes to mind!

Yeah don’t use Dorothy if it rhymes, she’d sound like a cartoon character or something. Anything else you like is fine though, and I like Edith May a lot! Beatrice?

I love Olive! Its different, but still kind of classic.
