Being that she is so young and wont really understand birthday etc yet I would get her a cheap fun toy and give the rest in a check and open an account in her name. Its very likely shell get so many toys, etc that mom will just find it all clutter. Most little kids have so many toys!

Then each holiday you contribute to that account in some quantity. Then tell her as she grows that this money is travel/college money and it is hers when she is 18 or 21 etc. (obviously needs your approval for withdrawl)

Wow that is super aunt. Think carefully about the sort of precedent you’re setting yourself for future nieces and nephews. I didn’t spend that on my own children’s 1st birthdays.

Kids that age love pop-up things like this one, the big question is whether she has one already:

I was gobsmacked when my cousin recieved an Ipad for his 1st birthday from a godparent.

But i think the opening bank account idea is wonderful.

@MissFireFlower:  Then I don’t see why your sister doesn’t move the big party closer to her daughter’s actual birthday. If she’s going to put the party on the Friday before her sister’s wedding then the spotlight’s obviously going to be shared. (Not that it matters, IMO). What I mean is I don’t think you have anything to be guilty about, and you shouldn’t have to cover that guilt with a $300 gift.

Is your neice walking or close to it?  If you want to be the super cool Aunt- you could get her this.  It is called a Strider Bike and if the child can walk- they can ride it.  It has no pedals and the child just balances on it.  I never would have belived it- but we saw a little boy riding one and talked to his parents about it.  This is our daughter at 18 months on hers.  They are apx $100.
