New mom question: It seems my 3.5-month old may have developed a cold. She’s all smiles, but she’s got a lot of fluid coming out of her nose and mouth. No fever, no trouble breathing, no real cough as yet, just sneezing and runny. Any advice? How long do colds usually last in babies? Will go to doctor for check-up maybe on Monday if it doesn’t improve. Thanks.

Take her in the shower with you if she gets too stuffy and also put a humidifier in her room. My 5 month old had a cold about a month ago that lasted about 4 days.

I don’t think there is much you can do for sneezing and a runny nose but if it gets stuffy, in addition to the shower and humidifier, if you can have the baby sleep inclined – like in a swing or carseat or stick something under the crib mattress to elevate one side a little – it will help the congestion to drain. Also the nose sucker will help with breathing and eating since it’s harder for them too eat when their nose is blocked.

If baby gets stuffy, you can get Ocean Mist nasal drops. You just put the drops in baby’s nose, and it helps break up the mucas, then suck it out with the nose sucker. Babies really hate this, but it reallydoes help.
