So my husband and I are on the verge of buying a house in a city about 45 minutes-1 hour away from us. Our initial plan was to buy in the late Autumn and start trying to conceive around the same time. But we’ve never lived in that city before, and were thinking of renting for a year beforehand to make sure we can handle the commute and like it (it seems very small-town and family-oriented, but who can really tell…).
The majority of apartments up for rent there are spacious 2-3 bedroom basement apartments, very new and clean looking. If we started renting in June/July (on a 1-year lease) and managed to conceive in October/November/December, the actual time our baby would be in the basement apartment would be very low. The houses we’re interested in buying, after the 1 year lease is up, are practically across the street so moving when our baby is a couple months old should be as relatively quick and painless as possible.
Are we crazy to want to have a new baby in a basement apartment? I can’t tell if this is a terrible idea or not.

I don’t think this is a crazy idea especially since it isn’t something that will be long term. I would think that it would be more annoying to have a toddler in a basement apartment than a baby, but even then some people still make it work. plus, you never know if you’ll end up pregnant in time to even have your baby there, or maybe you’ll find the house you want to buy earlier than expected and have to move out before the year is up. No matter what happens, I think it will be just fine. Your baby isn’t going to notice anything is different as long as you’re able to find a place with good sound proofing.

Not crazy at all. Babies are raised in apartments all the time. And while moving with a small baby may not be fun, is moving ever really fun?

I think your plan in general is really good, and babies don’t give a crap where they are for a long, long time. We have a 10 month old in a small apartment, and she doesn’t notice.

anonybee0810: Not crazy at all. We are currently in the process of moving from California to Hawaii and when we get there DH, me and our 9 week old baby will be living in a 1 bedroom furnished suite at a hotel for the first 2 months while we house hunt. (We are going from a 3,000 sq ft house to a 750sq foot place). Baby doesn’t care where we are at as long as she’s near us.

We live in a two bedroom condo and we are planning to TTC this year. Baby will probably live here at least a year or so until we buy a house or rent a bigger place.
As a PP said, babies all over the world are raised in an apartment. All they need is shelter, food, and love. They won’t know the difference between a house and an apartment! 🙂
