Well my little hunny is snuggling in his swing right now so I decided to take some time and write out his birth story. Sorry if it is super long! It has been a very eventful last month. It all started when at 32w 4d I went into preterm labor that ended me up in the hospital for the weekend of my baby shower. I was able to escape the hospital in time for the shower but put on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. Everything had been going well up until that point but at that time I developed pre-eclampsia. The goal with bed rest was to get me to 37 weeks so home I was armed with NetFlix and CandyCrush. During this time I had contractions every 5-10 minutes the entire time but they were pretty bearable. Then on February 10th at 35w 2d – I had ventured to my parents for dinner since my husband had grad school at night and I was going bonkers being stuck in the house. I was feeling pretty good and chowed down on dinner and even topped it off with a blizzard from DQ. I got home at around 1030 and felt the worst gas in my life. When my husband came home I was literally crying about the pain but refused to go to the hospital because it didn’t feel like contractions it felt like gas. After about 3 hours of this, we called the doctor because I couldn’t deal with the pain and they sent us in. I even told my husband – leave the bag at home hey are just going to give me IVs and send me home.
We got to the hospital at 1am on February 11th. They checked my cervix and it was 1cm (which it had been for the last 2 weeks). I got my IVs and then my contractions started ramping up to every 8 minutes on the dot. We were being observed and at 5am they checked again and I was 2cm at that point my doctor came and was getting ready to send us back home. At 7am they wanted to do one final cervical check before we left and at that point I was 3cm and had to be admitted – it was time to have the baby and I was freaking out. The moved us to the delivery room and my mom and dad came to hang out with us. It was pretty uneventful and I didn’t find the contractions all that painful (but again I was used to them at this point having them pretty regularly for the last 2.5 weeks). They just let me labor for about 5 or 6 hours. At about 2 they came in and checked me again – only 4 cm so they broke my water and things started picking up. At 5 when they came back in I was already 8 cm. At this point I decided to get the epidural – it was so nice to be able to not feel the contractions. During this whole ordeal – the thermostat in my room was broken and it was hot as hell so at 8 cm they rolled me to another delivery room. At 9pm they checked and said okay 10cm – got me all ready to push the doctor came in and said nevermind she still isn’t 9cm at which point I covered her with a big gush of fluid and she had to change scrubs (my sister tells me it was somewhat comedic). Another 2 hours and they came back and it was real this time – at this point I was exausted – I hadn’t slept in 48 hours and hadn’t eaten in 24 hours – I started pushing and the stupid epidual wasn’t working so they had the anestesiologist come in and give me another dose and up the amount. My sweet boy decided to flip sunny side up at the last minute too an got his shoulder stuck on my tailbone. So from 11-1123pm – I was pushing with 2 nurses on each side of me pushing on my stomach to try and get him out – they eventually also had to use the vacuum but then – he was born and I just laid back from exhaustion and relief. He was perfect – even though he was early he was a healthy 7lb 1oz and 20 inches long. I would like you to meet Jakob Stanley – my new little man!
