I would like to share with you my Birth story!
My Daughter is one week old now and I just cant get anough of her. It happened Wednesday morning Feb 18th and it all started with cramping (I was 37 and a half weeks). For about a week prior to feb 18th I would be woken up around 5am due to mild cramping however it was so mild that I would just fall back asleep after about 15 minutes… Wednesday morning was a little different. I woke up at about 6am with moderate cramping, since id been getting these cramps for a week now I really hadnt thought anything of it and tried to go back to sleep. Since the cramps were a bit worse than normal it had kept me awake for about an hour before I was able to get back to sleep, When I fell back asleep I had a dream that I woke up due to cramping and told my husband I though “this was it” and then *flash to* bringing a baby home. (maybe a little foreshadowing?)
8am hits and i’m awoken again by the cramps but this time they’re accompanied by lower back aches. I hadnt really thought anything of it because it was a pretty persistant achy feeling that would get really intense for a bit then go back down to a dull ache. I felt that something wasnt right so I woke up my husband (completely thinking I was being a wuss) after a few “peaks” int he “cramps” i called my mom to ask her what she thought that it was… She figured I just needed to poop. lol I let her go then quickly realized that it wasnt poop cramps i was feeling so I asked my husband to call my doula (this was probably close to 9am). When he explained how I was feeling to our doula she suggested that maybe was adjusting and that I was having bad braxton hicks and that I should jsut go get a non stress test done. Hubby and I showered (I did my hair and makeup thinking they would just check and let me go and hubby and I would just go to lunch), in the shower I believe my water broke because the water was hitting my legs and I felt a small gush… and off we went to the hospital.
We arrived at the hospital at about 10:30am where they took me into the assessment room and checked me… Little did I know that i was in labor so when they checked me i was having a contraction and that was agonizing, I was screaming and pushing myself to the top of the bed… it was aweful. When the nurse finished the check she looked at me and told me she thinks I was fully dilated… fear then set in. lol She wanted to double check so she had me raise my hips and checked again, my cervix was still all the way back but babys head was extremely low and I was 3cm dilated. At that point they figured it would go quick and admitted me. It took an hour to get into a labor and delivery room which put us at about noon. My mom, my best friend and my doula met us there.
Once I was officialy laboring (i say officially because we were all in denial that i was actually in labor) my doula had me kneeling on a birth ball because I was having pretty bad back labor. She helped to ease my pain by doing hip compressions but at one point it got so bad that I needed to transfer into the sit tub. Once i was in the sit tub I labored there for about an hour and a half. Being in the warm water really made the contraction so much more bearable. At some point i felt like i was over heating and started to get a little light headed and decided to get out, At this point I hit the transition stage where contractions where one on top of the other. I got sick and passed my mucus plug. The pain got so intense that i asked for the laughing gas… This was probably about 5:30pm… I huffed the laughing gas for about half an hour and started asking the nurse for info about the epidural… I didnt really want one so I asked the nurse to check me, she did and i was about 6cm at 6pm.
From this point it took an hour to go from 6cm to 9 and a half. When the nurse told me i was 9 and a half they started bringing in all the equiptment and i started to panic (more out of fear to feel the next stage, i figured that if i was this much pain now… then how much pain will i be in when pushing). I started begging for the epi but it was too late. Shortly after i felt the urge to push… this was very scary because my body just took over… my body was going to do this wether my mind was ready to. Once I started pushing all the pain went away, it was so surreal… I pushed for 45 minutes and at 5:56pm Wednesday Feb 18th 2015 my beautiful daughter was born.
During labor… I panicked 2 times, punched my husband in the chest and high fived the nurse. haha. I also dont think I could have had a natural labor if it wasnt for my doula, my pain and angst got to a point where my husband, mom, and best friend couldnt watch anymore but my doula just kept supporting me and i’m glad she did.
My daughter was born 2 and a half weeks early at 5lbs 15oz and 17inches long. Her name is Mya Mackenzie and she is officially my drug of choice.
