It’s a sophisticated name that he’ll have to grow into, and honestly….no matter what your name is, people will find a way to tease you, it’s part of life.   I like Don for a name, it’s lovely.

I probably wouldn’t name my son that, but simply because I don’t care for the name or have any positive association with it. Clearly the name has special meaning for you and if you like it, I say go for it. If you don’t love it, move it to the middle name position and you can still honor your dad. I wouldn’t worry about teasing – I agree with the PP, sometimes kids are going to get teased regardless of their name.

Donald Trump is the first person that comes to mind, but there’s nothing wrong with that! If you call him Don that would suit a younger boy more than Donald IMO. Either way, the name is after your father so it is special 🙂

The first thing I thought of was Donald Duck. Since it is a family name, I would still use it but as a middle name.

If it wasn’t your father’s name is it something you would be considering to use? Do you like the name itself? If not, I’d use it as a middle name. If you genuinely really like it then I say use it as a first name. One of my best friends was named after her grandmother, who had a very “old-fashioned” unpopular name – Dorothy. She goes by Dottie but she HATES her name and wishes that her mom had just used it as her middle name. I wouldn’t be so concerned about people teasing. I went to school with two Donalds and I don’t recall either ever being teased about their name. I think for me its just more about whether you really like the name itself enough to use it as a first name or if you’re only considering it as an honor to your father.

I will be honest, it conjures up too many images of Donald Trump for me. I don’t love it, but it’s a fine enough name.

@cjfs:  Only if you have a lot of Scots background, then he will have to rock it.

Otherwise, I think it’s one of those dated names. Like Debbie and Linda.

I’d use it in the middle, personally.

Totally use it for the middle name- but not for the first.
