So my husband and I are expecting our first baby in September, and we decided to name her Maliyah (pronounced Ma-lee-uh). When my family asks how we plan on spelling her name we tell them, Maliyah, and they all seem a little confused.
My sister mentioned today that we should just spell it normally, Malia, because she is concerned how our weird spelling will effect our daughter in the furture, like while apply for jobs and such. Our daughter will be a mixed baby, as my husband is black and I am white…I don’t want the spelling of her name to effect her chances in the future, and I dont want people thinking she is ghetto or anything just because we liked the unique spelling of her name.
What do you ladies think? Do you think the spelling of her name will have a negative impact on her life?
How would you spell Maliyah?

Malia. Please go with the traditional spelling

I would go with Malia, I’ve never heard the name before so I would pronounce it as Mali- Ya, pronouncing the y

I agree, Malia. I would pronounce her name Ma-lie-yah and then feel bad for mispronouncing it…

+1 please go with the traditional spelling. You don’t have to come up with oonike spelling for your baby to be special.

Malia is a beautiful name.
Maliyah confused me, I wasn’t sure how you wanted it pronounced and the y and h just look out of place to me.

Another vote for Malia. Lovely name, makes me think of Malia Obama!

DGB38: Ok… I don’t think it’s going to be a huge concern since everyone seems to be trying to be “unique” by spelling names in all sorts of crazy ways. That said.. I would pronounce Maliyah as “Ma-lie-yah” because Malia is a real name and if that was her name that’s how I’d expect it spelled.

Malia is a beautiful name. Aliyah is an equally awesome name. I wouldn’t mix them.

I’m sure your precious baby girl will be unique and beautiful in her own way. She doesnt need a complicated name. I have enough trouble with people spelling julia right.

Oh if you want people to say it that way, then write it “Malia” it’ll be easier for everyone! : )

Malia is a beautiful name. I think the other spelling has an association with Aaliyah the singer, but that’s a pretty name too.

DGB38: If I saw it spelled “Maliyah” I would pronounce it “Ma-lee-uh” because it looks likes Aliyah with an M in the front to me! I prefer the look of Malia to Maliyah though.

My friend pronounces her name the same way – she spells it “Maleah.”
