Malia is a beautiful name spelt the traditional way.

i like your original spelling better- maliyah. I don’t like Malia at all, honestly, and if I saw it I’d pronounce it Molly-ah. Never heard the name before but I think Malia looks really weird and your spelling makes way more sense to me.

I’ve never heard the name before. Malia looks like Mahl-ya to me, and Maliyah looks like Muh-lee-uh. I don’t know which is correct.

MrsCallalily:  Are you not from the US? I only ask because Obama’s daughter is named Malia, so I feel like anyone in the states would know the name.

OP, definitely go with the traditional spelling! As someone who has an unusual name plus the nontraditional spelling, I can tell you it’s a huge pain.

TGold:  I’m from the US and have no idea how to pronounce “Malia”… Especially after reading these posts. I don’t keep up with presidential daughters. When I first saw it I thought it was “MAHL-yuh” or “MAH-lee-uh”, and then just got confused lol…Maliyah to me is “ma-LEE-uh”… But only because I personally know an Aaliyah. Which is the correct way to pronounce Malia?

OP, IMO even though I don’t know which pronunciation you’re going for, I do think Malia LOOKS prettier. But to me they have different pronunciations as far as which syllable is emphasized.

Angil2000:  I’m Kristin too!  Yay for the “in”!

As for Malia, I have a friend named Malia and it is a gorgeous name.  The name Malia is unique enough without changing the spelling.

Stick with Malia. The other spelling makes me assume you cannot spell and are trying to be phonetic in your choice and failing.

When in doubt, always spell it correctly/the traditional way.

I’m not sure why Malia doesn’t look correct, it’s pretty close to a phonetic spelling. And most people are well aware of Malia Obama so I don’t think you’ll run into many pronunciation issues.

Yeah I vote for Malia as well.  As someone who now works in customer service and is constantly writing up quotes and proposals for people I get all kinds of different spellings for a single name and when people give me their names it will be some thing like…”My name is Jennifer with one N”, or “Jennifer with a Y (Jennyfer)”, or “Stella with one L”, or “June with no E”.  Your daughter will forever be “Malia with a Y” LOL!

I knew someone in high school AGES ago named Malia – gorgeous name, and despite being uncommon, practically no one mispronounced it.  Original spelling all the way!

I like Malia, but would prefer Maleah. Maleea or Maleigha aren’t bad either.

I read Maliyah as Mah-Lie-ah. I know a girl pronounced Mah-lee-ah, and her spelling is Maleah.

On a side note, I would pronounce Mahlia as Mar-lee-ah.
