All your options seem very nice.  Just don’t pick Alexander Alan.  I think that would be too much.

I like Alexander William for a boy, and Emma Adeline for a girl.

You could give a son two middle names.  We did that with our sons for similar reasons.  In my husband’s family, the father’s first name is used as the eldes son’s middle name.  I wanted to give our son my father’s name, but it is not necessarily a name I want him called as that name is almost exclusively used as a girl’s name nowadays.  As we had trouble conceiving, we didn’t want to lose our chance to carry on tradition so our eldest son has a biblical first name, DH’s first name, my dad’s name, then our surname.

When my second son came around, we gave his a biblical first name, a family name, a Celtic name (my dad’s name is Celtic) and then our surname.

mrsclaymls :  You do have a couple of less common girls’ names on your list–Clara and Adeline. And if you’re open to Emilia (which is a variation on Emily) and Claire (a variation on Clara) you have lots of options with just the names you listed here.

Clara Emily, Emma AdelineAdeline Emilia, Emma Claire, Emilia Claire, Clara Madison, and Madison Claire are all lovely combinations that use names you like or their variations. Clara Emily or Clara Madison would probably be my top picks for you. I love the name Clara, and I don’t hear it that often.

For boys–I like William Alan, Matthew Alan, Matthew William, Alexander Matthew, and Alexander William. But I’d probably go with William Alan because I do think that passing on a family tradition is important.

Definitely could two two middles. My son has two, for his grandfathers, my husband does too so we wanted to carry that on (even though it’s different names).

I don’t like Alexander Alan, but Alexander William Alan or Matthew William Alan both sound nice. Either with just William is fine.

For girls, I feel like I have been hearing Clara a lot lately (know someone with a Clara and it was a friend’s top girl name, but she had a boy). I find it kind of jarring and hard to say, personally. I like Emilia as pp suggested, and Adeline. Adeline Emilia actually sounds pretty nice. If you like Clara a lot I’d suggest it as a middle name – Adeline Clara sounds nice.
