You’d be surprised what happens with baby’s nicknames once they come. I NEVER thought I would call my daughter by her nickname, but it just seemed to suit her. So even if you think you will definitely call her Ellie, you may not. And even if you do, I don’t think it matters that that used to be the dog’s name. Clearly you like the name!

My parents named one of my brothers after my mom’s childhood cat, Ben. I dont see a problem with it if the pet is no longer around.

My name is the name of my nanas old corgi. I’m named after a dog as my mum was trying to get pregnant and it wasn’t happening. She was broody so my dad bought my mum a puppy as there was no baby. My mum used her girls baby name for her new dog. Then she got pregnant with me – so I got the name of the other dog in the family!

I had a once in a lifetime ‘soul dog’ who died a few years ago, and we fully intend to use his name as a middle name for my son should I ever have a boy. (It’s not a doggy name like ‘pooch’ or anything by the way!).

so we have a family tradition of dogs and baby names swaps. If it’s a human name too and it means a lot to you I think it’s a rather nice thing.  Go for it.
